GOLDEN HWY A32-Wellington -B84- Cassilis-Merriwa- JerryPlains-Mt Thorley- Newcastle

Hi All,

Hope everyone well, safe and warm.

Just asking has anyone travelled the A32-B84 listed below recently as we are looking at having to come from Wellington NSW across the Great Divide to Newcastle. Hopefully without to many devils elbows and travelling on the wrong side of road on very tight roads.

GOLDEN HWY A32-Wellington -B84- Cassilis-Merriwa- JerryPlains-Mt Thorley- Newcastle

Appreciate any advice on that run as have not done it before.

Cheers,

Neil and Suzie

Hi Neil & Susan the Golden Highway is good no real climbs or hair pins to worry about. Coming from the west you will come out on the New England Hwy just south of Singleton at Wittingham then just follow the Hunter Expressway to Newcastle. We have done it many times when going to either Dubbo or Mudgee the last time we did it was around this time last year pulling a 22ft van and we experienced no problems other than the usual roadworks. Merriwa is a good place to take a break park your rig in front of the reserve as your coming into town and if your feeling energetic walk the couple of hundred metres up the road to the shops it's good way to stretch your legs Merriwa is about your half way mark. It's good if you can time your run in order to avoid the shift changes in that Mt Thorley area as there may be a little more traffic on the road but nothing too serious..

Cheers

BB

Thanks B.B. for the great info as Suzie couldnt handle another tight really twisty road as we did one once fron Shell Harbour cutting through to Wagga Wagga and nearly got killed on numerous occasions.
Travel safely and keep warm.

What's the A32? It is not one of the roads I would take - Just follow this route. I wish people would not use route numbers, my maps don't seem to have them or have older route numbers. It is preferable to mention the towns you intend to pass through in their correct order.

No problem guys I don't know if you are familiar with the Newcastle area but depending on where you are heading i.e. the city, the lake, Port Stephens, the coalfields or just passing through to either the north coast via the Pacific Hwy or the M1 to the central coast is going to determine which exit you take coming into town. The Hunter Expressway has been open for 2 or 3 years so hopefully your Satnav system is going to be a version that reflects these newer roads and intersections.

Try to resist the urge to plant your foot on some of those long straight sections west of Meriwa it is still mainly a 2 lane highway and you can get pushed around a bit by semis travelling at speed in the opposite direction..

Enjoy your trip
