I have had a few hrs to burn this morning and have been reading a choice article on lemon vans and then reading rogues gallery , it seems that the dog is chasing its tale . The poor buggers that have bought a "lemon" seem to have virtually no chance of getting money back or their vans fixed . Its entirely up to the manufacturers integrity . And to that end because a majority of them are operating on a shoestring budget they cant wear the cost of fixing their mistakes or "short cuts ".The repairers more than likely thrive on this situation and to that end some of them are shonks also from things I've read. If there is a savvy repairer with integrity out there he/she could build themselves a huge business by starting up an onsite certification co. If they assembled a team of experts in the stages of building a van , and did onsite checks in factories as vans are built it could save a lot of anguish down the track for many consumers . Obviously there would be industry opposition to this practice , but if buyers utilised the service and and voted with their feet, not buying from companies that wouldn't accept the practice , then they would eventually come round because of pressure. Another thing is building insurance in the home building industry your protected by HIA insurance , they should bring in a compulsory ins for caravans as well at signing of contract .
Sounds good. I would rather buy secondhand. That way, hopefully its all been fixed. Unless its a lemon n always will b a lemon. Then the troubles just go to the next person. Guess we need to pay an experienced caravan repairer to look over it. Lucky i know just the person in brisbane.
Sorry Possum ,An engineer , though a learned man/woman more than likely would not have a clue about what to look for in a van. What do they know about sealing of a van ( a prime problem cause ) a knowledgable caravan technician that has seen all the problems would know where to head straight away to find potential problems going fwd , and these people that have specialized their expertise in the various stages of van construction would spot a short cut or poss hazard going fwd.
Colin Young at Caravan Council is a certified Automotive engineer that has been specialising in Caravans for many years, as are any inspectors he would recommend. At least you would have his knowledge of the industry and some of its consistant rogue operators.

I will tell what!!!! If you have one of the R.A.C clubs like the RACQ in Queensland do a road worthy, they go over it with a very professional approach. Like need to replace the cover on the seat belt where it connects. Get my meaning.
We need something or some one like the RAClubs in the Caravan Industry.
It may also reduce caravan roll overs, who knows.
Agree that the Industry which is expanding rapidly is in need of a shake up.
