Selling Motorhome

Anyone tried selling by Consignment through a dealer? I am considering doing this but concerned that it may not turn out well. Cash offer seems paltry, guaranteed return on Consignment deal a bit better but not great.  I live in regional NSW and buyers will be scarce In my area.  Reviews of dealers are not encouraging. I was told that my contact details would not be given to prospective buyers but I would prefer to talk to a prospective purchaser myself. I know the vehicle better than a salesman on a lot.

Anyone out there tried this? What was your experience?

Geoff

If selling any vehicle on consignment with any dealer ensure you register your security interest www.howtolaw.co/register-your-interest-on-the-pps-register-392285 to ensure no-one can skip with your money and van.

Have you tried advertising locally (Gumtree, this forum etc ) at around the consignment estimate less their commission or your estimate  to confirm your belief that a private sale might not be successful ?

Remember the Dealers consignment estimate may eventually  be on the high side to get you to list & you may be asked to consider lower offers to realise a sale.

We purchased ours here locally in Tassie from a  private Gumtree add 6 years ago & so have a 3 aquaintences.

If you go the consignment route check your insurance policy ie: liabilities regarding fire, theft. damage & demo accidents etc whilst in the Dealers hands.

When it comes to selling your motorhome you actually have 3 options.

1) Sell privately by advertising online, in magazines etc. Your success here will depend on firstly your location for prospective buyers to inspect, the buyer acceptance of the model and layout and of course the asking price. The negatives are private buyers may have trade ins and require finance to complete the purchase. The positive is you negate any sales commission payable to a dealer so you maximise your price.

2) Sell on consignment through a dealer, which means you delegate the sale of your motorhome to that dealer. In Qld the consignee dealer is required to be licensed, must maintain an audited trust bank account through which the sales proceeds must pass and must declare to any prospective buyer that the vehicle in question is in fact a consignment sale. The dealer will charge a commission for this service....in Qld 10% of the sale price plus GST. You will be required to ensure your vehicle is insured whilst on consignment.Any default by a less reputable dealer will be covered by the Dealer Fund provided said dealer is licensed. You will only receive payment when the motorhome is sold and settled.

3) Sell directly to a dealer at wholesale price. The dealer writes the cheque here and now.....you move on and the dealer puts the motorhome on his lot for sale. The best option from a convenience perspective.......the worst option from a price perspective.

Many years ago we decided to get back into vanning so spent the day sussing out vans at dealers. At each of the first 3 dealers we went to we noticed that they all had at least 1 or 2 vans that frankly were not very appealing insofar as clean or what one considered to be" sale ready".Upon asking each time we were advised that these vans were consignments and as such are sold as supplied by the owner and sold as what you see is what you get ! We didn,t find a van until driving home on a main Hwy and a fella had his van out the front of his immaculate home.We stopped ,looked and got invited in for a cuppa and everything felt right so we returned the next day and drove our new van home . Prior to that I walked into a van yard wholesaled my van I dropped 4K on what I wanted came home with his cheque and moved on with my life . Cheers

may want to check with your insurance company as to whether your goods would be insured if for sale on consignment

A couple of years ago a dealer in Adelaide went belly up. All consignment vans went to the administration, and owners lost all their money. When doing consignment, the practise is to sign a blank transfer form, or alternatively sign over to dealer. You have lost all your money if the dealer goes insolvent. Be careful.

I once had a month long struggle to get $20000 for a motorcycle I sold on consignment. A couple of months later that dealer shut their door.

I called it a narrow escape!!!

So many second hand RV's for up sale these days.

Everyone wants the 'latest & greatest''.

We'd be selling it privately on the internet if possible.

Why introduce a ''middle man'' in the form of a dealer, skimming off his share for basically doing nothing at all?

I would try selling it yourself through carsales.com , gumtree or a similar site. I wouldn't worry too much about being in a regional area because for something like a motorhome people will travel to inspect if it is what they are after. Rod.

Thank you all for your replies. Have thought long and hard will decide next week.
Never thought about insurance. I checked and the company wants a copy of the consignment docs, there may be changes with the excess will sort next week.
Montie, the figures I have been given seem consistent with your helpful post so I am comfortable with the deal.
Always thought I would sell privately but now it is crunch time not so sure. Dealer is in location where exposure is very good and advertising is done well so it is a much easier option.
Thank you all.
Travelling days might be over but will keep visiting forum for a while yet!

Try Gumtree, I have had good success for myself and friends I have helped, sell their van.
If you want to be successful selling the van on Gumtree be prepared to spend some money on the listing so your listing stays on top, trying to use the free option and you will most likely have no luck selling.
Cheers

I wouldn't worry about living "remotely" the right buyer should be willing to travel to find the right "one".  I bought our current MH from pictures and traveled from Nambucca Heads NSW to the sunshine coast Qld by train to pick it up.

Have decided to sell privately. Tried to figure out what I would really like to know if I was buying a Motorhome but didnt know much, so will send inquirers a link to a video about the vehicle and an information document setting out as much detail as I could think of that they might find of interest. Have advertised on CMCA members market, ad will appear on RV Sales as well. Have not read much on forums about sellng vehicles, will be an interesting process. Price is set half way between what I would get from dealer and what he would sell it for.
As a matter on interest my insurers wanted an extra $250 to cover the vehicle while on on Consignment!
If there are not many responses will go to Gumtree or Carsales, will try this for now.
Regards
Geoff

Normal procedure is to use a bank cheque.

Turned out we both used the same bank. When buyer confirmed that vehicle was as described, we went into local branch, was done by teller in seconds, both given receipts.

Very easy.

Dont know about internet transfer, but purchased a car recently and dealers policy was bank cheque only.

Hope this helps

Geoff
