NSW Caravan Registration cut by 40%

The NSW Government has announced that from November 1 the cost of registering caravans and camper trailers will be cut by 40%, bringing it more into line with other states.    https://www.news.com.au/national/breaking-news/caravan-camper-rego-costs-cut-in-nsw/news-story/3ffa9a898f0ca08f82ffe01c250bd113

"Standard fees including the $65 registration charge will apply". That probably means that they will still charge per kilogram or part thereof on top of this fee. It hardly compares with the other states (eg Qld, SA and Vic). And then you have to have an annual roadworthy check on top of that...

A 2700 kg Tare weight caravan will cost $398 plus $65 so a total of $463 in NSW, where it now costs $728, so still very expensive, just not as bad as it was. We live in Victoria where any van costs $58.10.

The cost of regestering a vehicle is made up of two components. There is a regestration fee of $65 per annum and a motor vehicle tax that is based on tare weight. Here are a couple of links with the facts.

Light vehicles motor vehicle tax   Scroll down for the current caravan and trailer tax. The 40% reduction will apply to that current table and come into force on the 1st of November. The 40% will not apply to the registration fee. (in other words the way the 40% has been written up in the press is not strictly true, the registration fee is not bering changed.)

Has the NSW govt adopted a sudden conscience? Perhaps they're pricked by the guilt of such obscene revenue grabbing after all, if so let's hope it becomes contagious! Meanwhile, we like to keep the topic of caravan reg under the radar in Vic...

NSW Government have been ripping motorists off for years and will continue to, this reduction although welcome goes nowhere near reality and demonstrates another reason why we need a National Registration and National Road Rules.

Does anyone remember the four cent by two year extra fuel levy that had a guaranteed limit of two years !! well its still here many years later.

When Governments increase taxes it's immediate

When governments reduce taxes its always somewhere in the future

I for one certainly am not going to congratulate them for lowering the price of caravan rego when they have been ripping me off for the past 40 years

Really? That 2 x 2 levy was put on back in the days when most of the states put a duty on the sale of fuel. This was challenged by some smart cookie and the high court proclaimed that only the Commonwealth could levy duties. The states ceased levying duties on fuel, the Commonwealth commenced levying the duties (the same duty Oz wide) and the receipts of the duty was remitted to the states. I think the 2 x 2 duty disappeared at that time. Do you know better?

I think you guys are referring to the 3x3 tax that Nick Greiner's NSW government introduced in 1989 supposedly 100% of which would be put towards road improvements. As you said Peter it lasted 11 years until it was challenged in the high court and they ruled that it had to be removed. Unfortunately If the truth was known it was probably just added into the general excise and we have been paying it ever since. I agree with you 100% Aussie when compared to other states the NSW government have been ripping off motorists for years so they really are only reducing the amount that they are overcharging us.

Cheers

BB

Price of fuel in New Zealand.

You think petrol and diesel is expensive in OZ, well here a liter of petrol cost now date 12/06/2018, $2.16 per liter, and diesel $1.44 per liter +diesel road tax 6.5 cent per km up to 3.5 tonne, any heavier and it cost a lot more, and to be bought in advance, if caught and you are behind in diesel road user charges, the fines are horrific, also for a diesel car the registration was $140 per year more than a petrol car or SUV, so we are really getting shafted, i think more than you in OZ. Greetings, Eddie.
