Grey nomads flock to the Top End as weather turns frosty down south....

AN increase in frosty days down south has sent retirees on the road, with thousands arriving in the Northern Territory during the past few weeks.

Grey nomads Chris Dohnt, 67, Warren Dohnt, 66 have retired and are travelling around Australia in a campervan. Picture: Keri Megelus

At the Discovery Caravan Park Darwin, assistant manager Alarnah West said the grey nomads had arrived about two weeks earlier than normal.

As soon as there are a few frosts, they start heading up to the tropical north, she said. The grey nomads are invaluable to us.

Warren and Chris Dohnt are visiting Darwin from Adelaide.

The couple have been retired for about two years, and have enjoyed spending months travelling in their bus around Australia.

Everyone gets on pensioners for being a burden on society, but weve worked all our lives and now were keeping all these places alive, Ms Dohnt said.

Caravan parks are full because of us.

Retirees are heading north earlier every year mainly because there's more & more of them & there's more competition for campsites.

The weather's been quite mild down south until the past two weeks.

We love this time of the year down south, put a jumper/wind cheater on & enjoy the serenity.

We've just arrived home from a 6 week trip to Northern Victoria/Murray River.

So many rigs seen with QLD & WA number plates, obviously avoiding the Southern invasion of their home states.

We've been around the eastern end of the Nullabor the last week.  Around 25/26 degrees, just beautiful temperatures.

We've just returned from a month touring through the Northern Goldfields of WA,

Beautiful days of up to 35c, clear blue skies almost every day, cool nights though, down to 7c,

Coming back to Perth via the Great Northern Highways, we met hundreds of Caravans heading North,

"Yep''  the Annual migration of Grey Nomads North, is well and truly underway,

It's a pity that so many are hell bent on going flat out and haven't got time to give a friendly wave,

"strike me"  slow down people !!!  places up North will be there tomorrow,

If your time is that limited...... You should have stayed at home !!

Travel by GNs and others for that matter is great for the economies of many small towns and rural regions.

I dont like to travel with the migrating multitude so plan my trips around that time and I also avoid times of school holidays.

Safe travels to everyone.

We left Townsville on Saturday morning, arriving in Toowoomba (for a few days, before heading to Canberra, then Warrnambool) last night. We saw lot of vans heading north (it gave my index fingers some exercise in "waving" to most of them). Pat said we hadn't seen many vans heading south - my comment was "one, the one in my internal rear view mirror - ours".

Enjoy "our warm north" peoples - take it easy on the water use as a lot of Qld is still in drought.

...... and we are enjoying all that Bright (Victoria) and surrounding areas have to offer us. Frosty morning but glorious warm sunny days. Bit chilly already, but loving it all the same. We have already seen early snow on the mountains - Falls Creek, Bogong and Hotham.

We spent 10 days in beautiful Bright & Myrtleford just a few weeks ago. Add Beechworth and Yackandandah into the mix and you have a stunning region to live in for a year. Envious!
