mercedes motorhome v ford transit???

Anyone with any comments, good or bad, about either of the above.  I am looking for a motorhome preferably with shower/toilet, aircon, etc, not too many k's.  I have looked at Mercs, Toyotas, Ford Transits, & VW. I like the Mercs but worry about repair costs.  There seem to be a few for sale.  Heard the transits are a heap of rubbish.   Someone mentioned VW, but I hear they are also exy to repair, & sometimes parts can be difficult to get.  Welcome your comments.

We had work Transit work vans . It was auto versions that gave trouble for some reason ? The manual vans where sold on at 150ks .. The normal brake rotor and pad change due to short city driving plus driver. Not being his van . I hired a Transit in NZ a few times . Surprised to see 400,000 klrs on the clock on a hire motorhome ! Pulled over NZ hills reasonably well . Itās the servicing that kills these vans . Lack of it !! Asked hire co ? They said every 5 to 70000 klrs they change oil etc . As they never know how long the next trip will be .

We have a Kea Endeavour mounted on a 2007 2.4 L diesel Transit manual, very happy with it.

As Aus-Kiwi remarked, regular servicing is the secret.

Like most vehicles nowadays parts are expensive.

Cant comment on Mecedes. smile

My transit is 10yrs old. (2008) 200,000kms. I've owned it 7yrs. Purchased ex rental at 90,000ks. Manual 6 speed diesel.

Never had anything seriously wrong with it. But, I think they are costly to repair if something should go wrong. Maybe, not as costly as a Merc though.

Just had LHF wheel bearing replaced. $1300. EGR $650. are the only repairs so far (touch wood)

Made many trips, not all on the blacktop. Big Lap, Down the centre and up to Darwin, outback to Birdsville and all around QLD & NSW. Its never let me down.

Love my Transit, she's 18 years old this year.... She's had a transplant.... nothing beats the sound of a throaty V8!.

Thanks everyone for such prompt replies. No negatives there. Thats the problem when you read reviews of different models, people who are happy with their vehicle never bother to say so. Only the moaners get online. Well, guess the search goes on. Happy Travels. Cheers Haze

Sorta agree with you on the "moaners", sometimes you make a complaint direct to the person/company that you buy something from and they just fob you off.  But, leave an honest negative review on their website and they'll bend over backwards to fix an issue.

For my next Motorhome (when I win Lotto) I'm thinking more towards something Isuzu based.... Longreach??? I can dream can't I?

G'day Haze

When we were searching for our new MH - now 15 yrs ago - we visited parks and asked people about their MH experiences etc.

There was a vary common thread thru their answers ... anywhere across Oz there are 2 types of 'light-truck' that can be serviced anywhere > Ford and Toyota.

We were offered a choice of Fiat or Ford or Merc.  The Fiat was $15k cheaper than the Ford, and it was $15k cheaper than the Merc.

We declined the Fiat as [back then] Fiat trucks were new to the Aussie marketplace and an unknown quantity, and decided that the Merc expense could not be justified as also, its servicing costs were higher than the Ford.  So the Ford Transit it was

We have now done well over 400,000km with the Transit, it gets its regular servicing every 15,000km and if the mechanic tells me that something [a bearing / tie-rod end / uni-joint etc.] needs replacing, then I tell 'em to do it.  Other than that, it just keeps on going - and going - and going

Hope this helps

Phil
