For a long time I have been looking for a 12 volt summer air Conditioner for our van.. Something along the lines of a diesel heater. Well I have just came across this unit as per above ebay link. It appears to be a mini style refrigerant A/C. and runs of 12 volt. Soooooo before I go ahead and purchase I have decided to throw it out there for comments from other like minded nomads. Also would like to hear from anyone who may have one of these units. It could be the answer to our summer heat when touring. Jay&Dee
What do you expect from this unit? If you want to cool a space, forget it. If you want to have a cold breeze coming form a potentially noisy computer fan, it may work. Look at the power draw: 0.2 amps @ 12V. That is less than the old style torch bulbs. Look at the 12 V Esky - it draws 4 amps and for what it is designed for, does a reasonable job. This would be similar but even less cooling effect. The whole package may be worth it simply for the 6.5 amp 12 V power supply that goes with it. As you may have guessed, I would not recommend it.
Get multiple Caframo fans - Sirroco - not cheap, but they draw .04amp on high speed - we never run them on high, no need. We have four of them in the motorhome, all placed to blow where we are - two near the bed, one flows over the top of the bed (head) and the other is at the foot, this one can also be used in the kitchen when cooking etc., the other two are near the dinette area, one of which can be swivelled to face the cabin, where our swivel seats become a visitors lounge.
Can even use them when driving to circulate air through the cabin.
Go on ebay - there is one guy who gives you a good price for two - the MK11 model - and free delivery.

Forget the possibility of 12V air conditioning - too much power is required.
To cool a caravan to, say, 22C with an ambient of, say, 35C is going to require (guessing) 1500W of power. At 12V 1500W requires 125A so my 100Ah battery, which weighs 30kg, would support the AC for about 45m before it was totally flat (as a pancake).
So, if you want AC for eight hours a day you're going to need 10 x 100Ah batteries and a means of recharging them during the other 16 hours. In addition you're going to need bus-bar type wiring and switches the size of a bag of sugar. You get the idea I'm sure.... :)
In theory 12V AC is possible, in practice it is totally impracticable.

Hi Jay&Dee jules47 recommendation re fans has great merit. I have both fans and aircon and the aircon stays off under 35.C. I almost installed a system similar to the one mentioned as I had 1kw of solar available to run multiple peltiers after my lithium batteries had charged for the day. I scrapped the idea because of weight issues high on the camper, and settled for a tired old window unit run from the inverter. It pulls a lot of power but it is usually available when needed. I run a 3kw inverter on lithium batteries and no gas cooking.

I have a fur baby to look after. Fans provide air movement but for dogs, they are not real good at keeping the dog cool. Something like this could be useful for the times I need to go and get the shopping. What would one of these cost?
