Telstra Air is Australia's largest wifi hotspot network, through which you can access your home broadband allowance at thousands of wifi hotspots across Australia. yes you can do it but it counts against you plan

I used to do my large downloads in large shopping centres (like Westfield.) That included M$ updates, Youtube and attachments on emails. There are other opportunities like McDonalds. Telstra Air will also work for you.

To get better internet capacity I recently changed from Telstra Mobile to Telstra Home Wireless Broadband. This gave me over twice the capacity for the same monthly cost. I now get 40 GB (plus an extra bonus 5 GB) for the same $70 per month (previously18 GB/month.) I don't know if this a convenient upgrade for you but you can look into it. 20 GB is also available for $45/month.

Thank you Peter, that was more the answer I was after, no danger of others getting into your computer? We soon won't have a home, but will enquire about Telstra home wireless. Presently using an 8G monthly and a 25G 12 month prepaid.

Whether others can get into your computer or not depends upon the strength of your anti-virus software and your firewall. This applies whether you are at home or at Maccas on WiFi. About the weakest software you can employ are those built into Windows, you are better off using other antivirus programs including Avast free anti-virus and ZoneAlarm firewall if you do not want to purchase or subscribe to a good suit of tools. The question regarding the security on open connections like Maccas of a shopping mall is the possibility of your traffic being read. That just means that you do not use those for personal things like financial and medical traffic. Use your Telstra wireless for that (or a VPN.)

Telstra Air is available to Telstra customers who have at least one of the following services:

Pre-Paid mobile
Mobile on a plan
Home broadband (ADSL, Cable or nbn services with a compatible gateway)
Mobile broadband

If you don't have one of the above services you can purchase a Telstra Air Guest Pass here.

Have another look. Maybe you can use a mobile phone tethered to your notebook to do the downloads. If that fails it looks like you will have to do your downloads whilst the navigator goes shopping.
