Gday...

Good to see CMCA is progressing their initiative to provide low-cost stopovers for their members. Is there any idea of cost per night as yet? Obviously, it is accepted that it will only be accessible to vehicles that are 'fully self-contained'.

One hopes that common sense prevails and that this 'lease' continues without the usual flurry of 'complaint'.

The article in the link shows -

King Street Oval is presently zoned as recreation.

Concerns raised from those objecting to the new park included that King Street Oval is a public area utilised by families and pets, as well as for horse events during the Campbell Town Show.

There was also opposition from those who believed King Street Oval should remain available for use by the community of Campbell Town, and the establishment of the park would risk of driving away native animals.

In a couple of threads last year it was highlighted that the National Competition Policy and the Tasmanian Economic Regulator were a real bug-bear throughout Tasmania.

From the earlier thread - Read the National Competition Policy in the links below that Tasmania has implemented and the Economic Regulator to enforce it.

http://www.treasury.tas.gov.au/economy/economic-policy-and-reform/national-competition-policy

http://www.treasury.tas.gov.au/Documents/NCP-Applying-Principles-Local-Gov-Tas.PDF

The push is not the Tassie Councils, or disgruntled residents, in these instances, but "some" businesses in the towns/area ... I won't mention van parks.

These complaints are from within many council areas in Tassie and these 'businesses' are lodging complaints to the Economic Regulator that they are being disadvantaged because the council has an unfair economic advantage in that the council isn't operating on a 'level playing field' in regard to allowing travellers to stay for free on council land.

If you read the links I provided, you will see that the Economic Regulator has little option but to uphold the complaints ... by either having council's discontinue providing low cost or free camping for travellers or charge a representative price - eg same nightly price as a van park.

Other local businesses in that town made representation to the Economic Regulator stating that forcing the closure of the 'free camp' was detrimental to THEIR business but the Economic Regulator was unmoved.

From CMCA's point of view, and the point of the traveller, I hope common sense prevails and those who are currently vocal in not accepting the stopover do not have any success.

cheers -John

There is still the Blackburn Park 48 hour stopover for self contained vehicles in Franklin St available. The last WikiCamps entry was Feb 5 so it looks like it is still operating.
