Well, here comes another bloody Tuesday.
Share market (ASX) will again be smashed today asthe US market tumbled further.

I was walking through our major shopping centre and there were people everywhere spending money so all is good.

As long the companies still pay a dividend then virtually nearly everyone will still be rewarded.
That is just the nature of the beast. It is one of the most unforgiven things on this earth.
Soooooo....But don't worry..... be happy...

Gday...

Two days does not a problem make. Never overreact to daily fluctuations.

Stay calm and be patient.

You will only incur a loss if you take out your money ...

Remember when Trump won ... a dip for a while and not only back to 'normal' but a rise.

Two major indicators to watch - consumer confidence and business confidence.

cheers - John

Such is the market. Short term corrections, long term view. Meanwhile the media will have a field day, as ever.

My share portfolio is down nearly 1%. When I open a new packet of Butternut Snap biscuits this morning, I'll tighten the belt a bit and have one fewer than usual.

Dow dropped more than 20% in 1989.

Liquidated my last shares late last year. Had an ASX listed property portfolio. Trouble was that only 60% was actual value the other 40% was goodwill (potential rises). When the market dropped several years ago by 20%, a $100 share was then worth $80. Then the goodwill disappeared. That's 40% of now $80. So the $100 share was then worth $80 - $32 = $48. That's just over 50% drop. Looking at it another way, the shares had to double in price to get back to pre-crash numbers. That never happened and was never going to happen. Dividends dropped too as income from rentals dropped too. A $1,000,000 property was then a lot less on paper, so the leases dropped accordingly.

The ASX indices track various groups of companies. It looks as though things are going upwards but the components of each index keep changing. I've tracked / invested in various listed diversified funds over 20 years and although the index was rising the components of the index were changing. Hanging onto shares never worked for me but trading on an almost daily basis did. Then the government wanted tax on dividends and capital gains tax when I sold at a profit.

Crypto currencies! That's just a giant Ponzi scheme as far as I can tell. Too hairy fairy for me.

Even more than a few days is worth sitting out. The last big drop early in the last decade was only a problem to those who panicked and sold up. I sat things out and 5 years after the start of the big drop my equities had returned to the same value. The market progressed a little slower than the per-crash times but I have done far better than those who panicked and sold up. Select solid companies and sit on them for the long haul.

Gday...

As with so much in our lives today, the mainstream media, with their hype, thrive on 'reactionary' responses, predictions on which celebrity will do what when, sports stars and teams will do what when ... no wonder people react to to misinformation and dramatic rhetoric.

Patience, liddle grasshopper ... patience.

In was interesting to see that back in 2008-9 when the market last went down, graphs of performance over time were reduced to 2 years, then up to 3 etc. so the indices / share prices looked good. Companies were saying "look our prices have increased 30% in last 3 years" when if fact they were still way below 5 & 7 year performance which is their period of time good shares start to pay off. It was difficult to see 10 year performance stats.

Where it really works is if you have shares paying a 6% dividend and the share price halves. You are then getting a 12% dividend on your investment. Finance institutions can use all sorts of smoke and mirrors to make shares look good. Then there are such things as bonus issues, acquisitions & mergers, which all muddy the statistics.

When I took a package in early 2006, I rolled my super over into a guaranteed capital / market rate interest (re-invested and approx a short term fixed deposit rate) until I turned 60. I wanted income, not capital growth. Normal for > 60. Others < 60 that took same package rolled over into a Super share fund and told me I was a wimp. Not long later when large amounts of their capital was wiped out it was a different story. Their dividends were reinvested in the fund and then lost 15-25% of their capital.

Gday...

Sure can understand how people always MUST invest within their personal risk profile. The only sensible way to go.

I retired in 2008 ... set up my 'nest egg' in a 65%-35% 'guaranteed to growth" profile. Yep down it all went in October.

I didn't lose too much, but as an example, I left $75,000 in BHP pre-crash and it was only worth $24,000 at the end of 2008.

However, I did not withdraw anything other than my 'self-funded income' until mid-2010 when I changed my 'risk profile' to 75% growth 25% guaranteed.

It is sure looking good now ... literally, I have the same balance as at 31 Dec  2017 as I had in January 2010, and that is after my self-funded pension and admin and other costs coming out.

DEFINITELY, I keep a watchful eye on movements in the share/investment market and I must admit I have a switched-on financial adviser who earns his admin fees very well keeping a knowledgeable eye and passing good advice. If he says to change my 'risk profile' I will follow his advice.

But I do not react in any way to daily movements - it really is only a loss if you withdraw when it drops. The reason the Dow Jones, and I betcha the OZ All Ords, will rise today and probably tomorrow is those smart operators now buying into the shares that dropped on Tuesday - some excellent blue-chip shares were bargain prices yesterday.

And despite all that ... the money is there to be spent - wisely and cautiously of course - but I am not going to be here forever and I would much rather die on the pension with little investment left rather than die with a few hundred thousand bucks tucked away for others to spend when I'm gone.

Cheers - John

John.

That's where the SKI trip comes in handy (Spend the Kids Inheritance). Given my parents' (dad retired at 58, passed on at 82, mum retired with dad and is approaching 94) great retirement, I'm aiming for that too. Spend all you can travelling and socialising whilst you still have good health. Parents didn't have a lot of money, but great health. I'm aiming for about 80 to have most of it all spent. Own everything and the full aged pension will more than likely cover anything. In-laws had same plans but waited until they were nearly 80 to even travel, but their health stopped them. Never got to spend their hard earned money. Wife & I are planning to follow my parents lead, not my in-laws.

Jim

I see your post you refer to (the Golden Shower) is still open and available in the I Digress forum, which I think is where it belongs, so you can still talk about your dog if you want.

The one about naturist grey nomads is also there, also where it belongs.

I find it ironic that you were most upset that someone found your reference to a "golden shower" offensive, and made some pointed comments at them about their opinion, but express the same offense at someone who mentions nudity on their travels, a much less "offensive" state of being in my opinion.

Quite frankly, I think you need to apologise to Cindy, as comments like those you make against her are unwarranted and unfair. The forum and website that Cindy has created here has done more for the Grey Nomad community and members of this forum than any of us, including you, will ever do. It has provided a place for all to express opinion, find out information, have a laugh, and seek solace from others with like minds, and your personal attack, via cyber space, is pathetic.

Perhaps you need to remember how upset you got the first time you were on this forum about similar remarks made at you and your wife at one stage that saw you leave previously.

I for one support Cindy and her move of topics similar to those mentioned to a more applicable forum, and also support her management of HER site totally.

If others don't, then we should be seeing a lot more caravanning forums spring up as they start their own as you suggest Jim.

As my manager once said to me, "There's always the door if you don't like it here!"

Hi everybody,
Thanks for your contributions on this topic. Unfortunately, it has gone wildly off subject so I am closing it down now. I don’t really like to address personal attacks here, but feel I should make some comment.

As many of you know, I set up this forum and associated website some 13 years ago as a way of helping grey nomads keep in contact as they travelled, and as a way of allowing wannabe travellers to access the expertise of those who had been there and done that. Seven years, we started a newsletter, the Grey Nomad Times. Last year, for the first time, we asked any reader who wished to make a voluntary contribution to help us keep producing the newsletter to do so … if they so chose. We did this because the workload for my husband and I had become overwhelming and because we didn’t want to charge a subscription. The whole purpose of everything we have done is to try to reach, and help, as many grey nomads and wannabe grey nomads as possible.

This is really nobody’s business but my own but, for the record, I can assure everyone that I am certainly not some high roller, corporate fat cat living the high life. Very, very far from it!

And finally, just a quick reminder that our forum rules clearly state that personal attacks will not be tolerated on this forum. As always, if someone has an issue with the way the forum is run or with any post or poster, I would be very happy to respond to a private message and either try to sort out the issue, or at least try to explain my perspective on it.
Thanks everybody.
