Weighed Ute & Van

Took my kit over the Vicroads freebie at Leigh Creek (Ballarat). https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/newsmedia/2017/free-self-service-weighbridges-for-heavy-vehicles-in-rural-victoria

The ute (Ranger 4x4 XLT 4WD) weighed 2660kg & the van (Jurgens J1901) weighed 1540kg. There was probably about 60kg missing from the van and about 140kg from the ute if I'd been going away for a week or so. Was quite pleased.

The tow-ball mass was 170kg (did that at home). Recommended minimum tow-ball weight is > 10% of van. Gross trailer mass is 3500kg, gross towing mass (ute & van) is 6000kg, and gross vehicle mass 3200kg.

Well done Rusty. Sounds similar to my set up. Collie is just a tad more under.

No pencil and pads on the side of the road for you.

Something else to check next time would be the weight distribution between the front axle of the tug and the rear axle.
It is technically possible to exceed one of those without exceeding the GVM.
And tyre pressures need to be according to the load carried by each axle, so good information to have.

Cheers,
Peter

Correct Peter. I have checked front axle, then rear axle, then GVM. All under listed weights. Tent on or off.

As I live in the aluminium tent and tug tyre pressures stay mostly the same psi but if tent not hooked up for a while I drop rear by 5 psi.

My van is only a single axle and I measured the ball-weight at home. The only issue I had is that the LED display for the Vicroads scales was a tiny little readout at the top of a pole about 100 metres away. I had to get out and walk. I think the truck two in front of me had some binocs.

Must say I was pleased that I took the couple of minutes to do this. Peace of mind and free.

My van max is 1600kg with recommended 50psi cold.

Thanks Rusty for putting up that vicroads link. I live just down the hway from the Leigh Creek weighbridge and will go and check mine as I really don't know what we weigh when we are loaded up for a trip. Rod.
