These are the main roads I drove through, spending time exploring many smaller roads and tracks etc. The empty area right through middle, I got lost in on another drive a while back. So I think I will have to move over to check out another part of the map. It's getting hard now to get lost in western Victoria.

PS never ran out of power once yet.  Again, only one night in a van park in all this time, due to nowhere else to stay that night.

You missed out on the whole of the Victorian Wimmera! No Naracoorte Caves & Coonawarra Wineries in SA?

Plenty to see & do in the area of Edenhope & Balmoral.

Great free camps at Bailey's Rocks, Fulham Streamside Reserve & Cherrypool on the Glenelg River. Plenty of free camping at the Black Range State Park & Rocklands Reservoir.

Done every road there (plus more) except to Rainbow. You can get lost but really only if you leave the bitumen.

Hi, i can see you did  the Great Ocean Road as well. any recommendations for places to base yourself and do day trips up and down the GOR?  Pt Campbell, Apollo Bay, Port Fairey etc Heading to Geelong way in Feb, but have 3 weeks to wander along the coast.thanks,

Steve, stayed at Henty Park at Portland, Rear of Panmure Hotel at Panmure, and beside the lake at Lake Colac.

There is also a camp at Fitzroy River on the coast between Portland and Pt Fairy.

I should also add in Sawpit Campground (Narrawong Forrest )  North east of Portland.

There is also Johanna Beach, east of Apollo Bay but it is quite expensive for no power.

Off to the West Coast & Gawler Ranges of SA next trip, John?

Don't get sick of oysters at Ceduna, Smoky Bay & Coffin Bay, though. We left Ceduna in 1987 - before the oyster industry kicked off but have been back a few times since for a good feed!

Hi Meetoo
As you stated on your original post that you had done the Mallee and Wimmera on a previous drive.
When you were there did you call into Birchip and see the Mallee Bull and buy some of Australias best vanilla slices from the local bakery?
Birchip is one of the very few small country towns with no closed shops in the town.

Hi Birdo.  Yes I went through Birchip about 4 times. Saw the bull. Spent an afternoon there chatting away with the locals in the main street. Seem to be a lot of 'foreigners' live around there. Very friendly place.

There are a few foreigners living there but not as many as a lot of other country towns.

As a matter of fact one of these foreigners happened to be the local  G.P.and he saved my friends life.

I have been visiting Birchip since 1954 through meeting my friend at Boarding School.

In 1957 i went to visit my friend on his farm and it happened the district Double Barrel Championship was being held that weekend.

I borrowed a gun and ended up winning the event by shooting 60/60 which was a big break back in those days.

Birdo, the Birchip ones have got some competition. Many folk rave about the ones from leitchville, 150 k to the west. Me, I will eat them anywhere, (and do)

I think The Birchip Bakery lost the title to a Bakery in Mildura a couple of years ago.

Fairly sure the competition is run by Lions or Rotary but not 100%sure also i think the Halls Gap bakery won the first competition.We just happened to be there and bought some.

Whether Birchip is first second or third or wherever in the competition i always by a dozen to take out to my friends farm.
