Yes I think we have all wandered of the track a bit but the OP did make refernce to trucks.

The safe speed is undoubtably the legal speed that you are comfortable with.
There is a statement above that trucks do not like vans that are sitting on a speed close to there allowed 100 kph.
I am afraid that the truckies concern around a van that is doing that speed arises when there is no communication or consideration by the van driver.
I try to travel around 90 to 100 kph on a highway but only if it is safe to do so.
Many truckies have told me that they are happy to sit behind me at that speed until an opportunity arises to pass.
The secret is extending them the opportunity to pass quickly and safely.
Maintaining a consistant speed is also important so as not to cause the truckie to have to be constantly changing up and down gears.
I am sure we have all followed the motorist that really believes that he is a safe driver by slowing down each time another vehicle comes toward them.
This slowing down is even more pronounced when the oncoming vehicle is another truck.
What I am trying to say is maintaining a speed at which you are safe and being prepared to assist when another vehicle is passing.
By maintaing your safe speed a truckie soon works out his plan on overtaking.

Above all... no one will communicate better than the "spoken word"

Here is a thought out of left field in regards to using your indicators - follow the road rules. Creating your own rules only confuses other road users who maybe not as familiar with these so called universal practices. By the way in a lot of countries I have driven a quick use of your hazard lights signals thankyou after someone has moved over or slowed down to let you pass. Here in Oman the last vehicle in a line of slow moving traffic will leave their hazard lights flashing until the next vehicle comes up behind them and puts theirs on - great way for people to be prewarned  to slow down especially as most of the roads have 120kph speed limits.

I don't use hazard flashers when I am the last vehicle in a line of slow movers ... but I most DEFINITELY put my hazard flashers on if I am the last vehicle in the line to pull up at the little lollipop dude at roadworks telling us all to STOP.

Sitting still on an open highway with a speed limit of 100/110Kph letting every fool in the world to hurtle at me at full bore is not my idea of being relaxed

OH ... and even if there is a 80>60kph slow down signs ... it is unusual for them to followed by many drivers. cry

[EDIT: OH ... I also tend to be transfixed on my mirrors so I get at least some warning before joe blogs enters the rear of my van and stops at the bedroomhmm]

There may not have been 100s of rear-end prangs into caravans when stopped at roadworks ... but sufficient for me to be wary.

I probably need to clarify the last post I didn,t mean traffic in the slow lane moving at 20 or 30 km below the speed limit put their hazard lights on. They put them on when the traffic is moving slowly in both lanes  and people are only just crawling along or as you suggest stopped.Sorry for the cofusion,  I,m also aware that people in Australia probably do the same thing just out of self preservation but in my experince it is not as common practice there as it is here.

It doesnāt take long traveling Hume, Stuart, Nullarbor etc to work out the comeradere between track drivers . If they come up behind me I call them . Explorer to Semi behind . Iāll slow and pull over when safe to pass . On CB . As he passes I flash to let him pull over in front . Then often when following they call you . Explorer motorhome behind .. Iām turning right ( or left?) in 500m ok . Call back . Thanks have a food day . This is the sort of communication between trucks or vehicles on road . Found this happening mostly around mining areas . All up W.A . As you got back to NSW , Vic it is less communication!! I guess just too many on road etc .,

I keep an eye on the ear vision mirror and has soon has I see a big rig coming I call up to let them know that I can see them and tell has soon has i can I will pull off and let them pass , Most time they It ok I am Happy with your speed and once I will be turning off this road in few KM , I am not on a time limit when ever I have traffic building up behind I will pull off at next parking bay on the highway and they are not far apart .
