Bedmaking in a van .Not fun!

Gday ,now that we live in Echuca we never go away in summer as we are already in a tourist town and the weather is perfect.Having said that we are just a couple  ,however over Xmas and the new year we grew to 14 folk and as a consequence we also let a couple use the van as a bedroom and the husband being an ex navy man had the bed stripped and in the laundry when they left .My job was to remake the said bed  ! Those of you with a queen size bed at the front with robes either side will get the picture .You kind of have to pull the mattress back so as to fit that mongrel fitted sheet at the top first then the last corner I swear that a block and tackle is reqd to pull the last bit of the corner down !! That said you then push it back up to the front wall and finish with the top sheet. Now the fun part ......first you must shove the doona quilt thingy inside the said doona cover this requires you to run backwards and forwards to either side of the bed trying to get it tucked into the top corners .Upon achieving a climax one then tucks the bottom bits into said corners too,200 buttons or so then have to be shoved into holes on the likelihood of the doona trying to escape ! Finally you try to tuck the topsides in but the wardrobes block that section so you just kinda fold it under itself. All done ? you ask ?  er nope not yet .One the has to hide our 2 pillows behind 2 massive big fake pillows that look real flash. These are a legal reqmnt that my wife insists on in case the Queen may drop in for a cuppa one arvo maybe ,heaven forbid the she goes home and tells Phil that the Westys had crappy pillows ! As a postscript to this and since we have been married close to 50 yrs we can be very honest to each other ,so I have informed my love that should she drop off her perch prior to me the pillows get the flick first up , then its off to buy a real good old fashioned sleeping bag that fits fair in the middle of the bed .Cheers Thanks for reading .John

Yep ... know the problem.

Lots of tips on fitting doona covers.

I find it easier to stand on one side and give instructions to SWMBO.

ps.  We use our fancy covered pillows to hold the block out curtains against the window.

That is why we opted for a standard double bed. The builders tend to leave more room between the mattress and the wardrobe, plus you get more usable wardrobes.

When refitting doona covers we never attempt to do it on the bed, we do it in the other end of the van. We simply feed the top of the doona into the cover, locate the top corners into the cover, we each grab a corner each and lift them into the air. With a bit of judicious shaking the cover falls down over the doona. There is no sense in doing it on the flat and making hard work for yourself.

As for the fancy pillow slips, one accommodates the dressing gowns and the other stores the spare lightweight blanket. You just have to think laterally to survive in a van.

Same here, if the Mrs falls off her perch first it's a sleeping bag. And out with fancy but useless pillows

Our motorhome is the short wheeled base version with a double bed above the cab and the dining area seating folds down to the other double bed and that's what we use for our bed. Above the cab is our storage for folding chairs and small table, pillows, blankets and sleeping bags. After one weekend trying to put a fitted sheet on the made up back bed I gave up and bought two very good sleeping bags so no more bed making problems. We have never had a doona on our bed at home either, always blankets and a bedspread or comforter. With our son's single bed doona cover I always turned it inside out to hang on the line and when dry leave it inside out, shove my hands into the top two corners, grab the top two corners of the doona and hold it up and let it fall down right side out. As a queen size is much wider maybe two persons on the top two corners but the rest should be the same. PS Our comforter set we have on our home bed now came with the fancy pillowslips and mini pillow so they get used for decoration only when the bed is made up. Our motorhome is only very basic (ex rental) so nothing fancy anywhere, but it gets us from A to B. So sleeping bags for us.

You really should do it together. Much more fun that way. You never know what mischief you will get up to. Mr D and I do it that way all the time.

We have two singles in the van. Hers has a fleecy fitted sheet, top sheet and a thick doona. Mine is a tad more basic. And when we get up in the middle of the night we don't bounce each other about when getting in or out.

Ours is a fold up bed. We have protector, fitted sheet and Doona which we donât fold up with bed . It is too much trouble making it likes conventional bed . Depending on climate we often have just a sheet over us at night .. Two straps hold things together when we fold it up .. Trouble getting the Mrs to relax over this little things till we get home !! Somethings cannot be perfect all the time !!
