I am a new member and about to take off on the big lap. i believe i need a generator for those free camping times. Can anyone recommend a genny that fits the bill at reasonable cost. i have an IBIS 3 Air cond. to run but can make do 12volt for most other appliances. i am having trouble deciding whether to buy the known brands or the cheaper options like Crommtech or Gentrax. Any help for me??
we have a Chinese 4kva generator which has key and remote start and have had it for eight years and had no trouble at all it is a fuji only downside it is a little heavy now that I am nearly 80 years old as it weighs 30 kgs it will run what ever you have
Hi there, just my 2 cents worth, i have used many and still have 3 different generators, Kipor great, little chinese 1200w pure sine wave, great as well, little repco 2 stroke, fine for what it is, but after being without power here for 36 hours after storms here, the little did well but not enough grunt when the fridge and the freezer happened to start up together, bit the bullet and paid $1499.00 for a honda EU20i from the generator place with free shippingvia startrack ( a.1% surcharge for cards and paypal) My impression of the Honda, fabulous, fires first time with only a small pull on the starter rope, quiet as quiet when switched to economy ( in fact i thought it was going to stall it was so quiet!)
That price was the December special, but i see they are still advertising on the web, the store at Hoppers Crossing, really top service from them, highly recomended. I have no affiliation with them, just telling about mt experience, hope this helps you to make up your mind as a gennie on the big lap is an important piece of gear, regards
We have a Honda Ei2000 To run our A/C on a 4mtr cord if needed, since late 2015. Before that a an Ei1000 which I use mostly. Its now 15 years old and never missers a beat.
Keep in mind, if you need to fix whatever you decide to buy. Honda service is Australia wide. Farmers use lots of them. Same as Toyota's 4 X 4's.
Neither are the cheapest, however they stand the test of time. For the extra $$, why bugger up a fantastic trip.
IMO go for what you can afford for the long term.
PS: Been air cooled. I change the oil in mine every 50 hours of run time. At around 200/250mm of oil, its nothing. OR every 12 months, reguardless. Plus it keeps you trouble free.
I have a Honda 2kva in our "Slide on" and also a Honda 3kva in our "Fifth wheeler".
Both bought (from different Sellers at different times ) as "used" units via EBay for around half price.
Have never had or expected a problem with either. Honda is well made and durable.(Been using Honda "stationary engines" for over 50 years - never had a problem - ever) Both exceptionally quiet (the 3kva only ever runs a little faster than idle - really quiet)
I think that the above is meant to be a joke. Not nice to a Newbe perhaps.
The advice about the quality of the Hondas seems sound & I'd try to stretch the budget to go that way if I could (Says someone without a gene). MY SIL was just given a new Honda because his boss heard that he was in the process of buying a new camper trailer. You never know I might get a loan.

Yes, obviously it's a joke Joyce. Nothing wrong with a little humor. Image starting that baby up in a campground!

Hello steve and kym, a very warm welcome to you. We have a yamaha 2400. This is big enough to run the air conditioner. Airconditioners take a lot to start up i was told So we went for this one. It is one of the quieter ones although i think honda are quieter still. We have been in our caravan 3 years now and only use it when it is summer and then not that often. Have a great time. Enjoy.
Don't ignore the Kings brand of generators sold by 4WDsupacentre. We have had a 2KVA one for over 12 months and am very happy with it. They also have a 3KVA model that may suit you.
Thank you all for your replies.
Yes, I did think that Desert Dweller was pulling my leg. I wasn,t planning to pay quite that much but maybe i need to reconsider.
Thanks again and talk on the trip
We bought a Westinghouse 2.4 as an introductory offer for just under $1000 & it has not missed a beat. If I had not got that I would have gone the Yamaha.
We have this one around $695. Never gives any trouble. Runs aircon at very low rpm, and can add the coffee machine and/or the microwave if needed. I added the Anderson plug to start it when the original battery chucked it in. Eventually got a new battery.
