Getting back on the road is going to be delayed a tad longer

Our timetable for getting back on the road has been dealt an untimely issue that we did not see coming.

After taking the crusier to our normal service center, we were dealt a bit of a blow when we told that the number

cylinder was a little lower in compression compared to the others. Further investigation showed a broken ring.

So there it is, major dollars to repair this issue, new pistons, rings, probably valves, head gasket plus the labour

around $10,000 although may be able to,get it down to $9000.

So as a result we are forced to stay put in Rye for about another year while we manage the finances to cover all this.

somebody once said, It's the joys of motoring, not sure about the joys bit though.

Brian (briche)

Trade it in, that's what we did after our Ford Ranger was repaired from being hit by lightning. Easy.

That's a bummer Brian, totally bad timing and what a disappointment. I guess you've investigated alternatives like a 2nd hand motor from wreckers or using one of the Japanese import engines. I hope things brighten.

Good Luck.

Hi Brian.

I agree with DD, trade it in.

Sorry to hear of your hiccup, Brian

I suppose it is better to happen now, than perhaps having the engine fail, when you are halfway to somewhere

Hi all;

I have to agree with a couple of the posts, trade the old girl in and that may be a bit hard if your motor is torn down ( re the broken ring issue ). A second hand motor from the wreckers. A jap import is also worth thinking about. In Japan i think the cars and buses are taken off the road with a very low mileage ( some ware around 80,000 Kms ) and are checked out before being sold overseas.

If it was me, have a good hard look at how long you have had your 4x4 and all of the good times you have had over the years. The condition of your 4x4 Paint, tires and does every thing work and do what is asked of it.

OK replacing the engine or a total rebuild is going to cost big money and would also go towards a deposit on a newer model. The problem is no matter how good it looks ( unless you are buying new ) may be in good condition with unknown issues and maybe just the ticket. But what if it turns out to be a dog and 12 months down the track you have more issues and it's going to cost more money.

One would think that you would be better off spending your money on fixing the old girl up. That way at least you know what you have.

I too will have a problem with my Pajero, no problems as of yet. But 23 years young and 230,000 Kms it is in the back of my mind, when something will go wrong big time. So far only glow plugs.

I am very much in favour of fixing what I have if it is still going to do what I need.
$10,000 to replace a motor is still quite cheap when it comes to changing it over.
Hard to tell from the photo, but it looks like a 100 series. Sell yours in a broken condition, then find a replacement may cost you up to $30 - $40k, so getting a new motor and looking forward to 200k of trouble free travelling is cheap in comparison.
If you were to get a different one who is to say that it has not come from someone who has had problems with it, so traded it to get rid of their problem and pass it on to you.

I just had a look to see how much Landcruisers go for and some are pretty cheap - the link is to one in W.A. ...4.2TD has high Kms (don't Toyotas last forever?) but has RWC so can't be that bad. $4000 seems cheap to me.

Good Luck.

If that was in SA I would grab it if only to keep it for spares for mine.

As it is a 1993 remember that it only has a towing capacity of 2500kg.

What caused this damage ? If diesel ? Was it filled with petrol ? Has engine ever over heated ?? They can be repaired way cheaper ! If bore and journal tolerance is with in spec . It MAY just require rings , bearings and gaskets etc ?? But I would be checking as to WHY this happened?? As it could happen to new built engine ! Fuel type and deliver is critical on Modern engines !! Petrol or diesel !!

I believe this to be a scam.

If not, I have sent an email enquiry and will go over Monday to pick it up.

$4750 for a 1999 VX with only 300000km on the clock.

Yeah, sure.

Redbook price is about $15000 and they are always way under.
