I'm sure everyone is well aware that Amazon is up and running in Australia.
After only a couple of days trading Gerry Harvey and his cronies have been playing down the affect it is having on his/their business, calling it a non event, early days yet.
This afternoon I received an email from an online retail business I use, explaining deliveries over the Christmas season, this is an excerpt:
"Added to this silly season is the "Amazon effect", speaking with all our different freight guys and girls the Amazon sales are already smashing the volumes so vans are full and it appears to be the cause of backlogs all over the country. Locally Fastway have doubled their Christmas casuals to help handle the volumes but that may differ in your delivery area."
BTW I'm a big fan of Amazon in the US, service delivery and prices are second to none.
I had a look at Amazon.com.au as we wanted to buy a monitor as a Christmas gift for our daughter. The range was poor and the prices weren't cheap, we ended up buying one from the Good Guys instead which was a much better buy. The range of goods offered is nothing like the US and the prices so far don't seem particularly cheap.
We buy a lot of optical gear for our hobby of photography & bird watching. This site is by far the cheapest by a mile. They sell other types of gear as well, like car sound, dash cams & GPS.
If you type in XMAS17 & apply it you get a further 10% off. We ordered a pair of binoculars & received them the next day. Great service & prices. Amazon have a very restricted range of goods.
My feedback from people was the same. Nothing all that cheap on there, in fact Good Guys and Harvey Norman had better prices on some goods. I suppose when you think about it goods can only get so cheap.....unless somebody figures a way to give it away for nothing! Amazon a bit of a storm in a teacup and not the launch they were expecting.

We are a tiny market by world standards. I can't see how Amazon US and Amazon UK prices (being based on huge domestic & international markets) could be matched here. Same goes for product range, Amazon AU will never be able to carry the same quantity for our small domestic consumption. I'm also struggling to see how Amazon can support a dedicated infrastructure here and still make a healthy profit considering the set up and operating costs involved, particularly Aussie wage structures. Amazon AU pricing may be very competitive against bricks and mortar retailers, but it won't generate much of an online overseas market - Amazon US, UK and eBay already have that sewn up. Logically the AU business case must stand up somehow otherwise they wouldn't have done it, I'm just yet to figure it out!

It might be more of a level playing field for Aussie business, if Amazon paid their fair share of tax, if you support Amazon you are kicking your country in the guts.

I'll second that!
Plus creates unemployment when small stores close down. But that's how it seems to be these days, we've all but decimated our manufacturing base with one sided free trade deals and now we are shutting down our retail base with online sales. I wonder when we are going to wake up.
Being in the market for a high end camera thought I would look at Amazon. Price similar to Hong Kong / China etc. Their offering supplied by Kogan ex Hong Kong. So obviously no manufacturers warranty only sellers statutory warranty.
E-Bay have a number of sellers offering Manufacturers warranty at a competitive price .
Appears to Me that Amazon are using Aussie sellers for some of their products & pick up a commission, guess that would be the pointy end of the wedge. When the competition is reduced ???
