We are planning a trip across the top end between Cairns and Darwin in April next year after the wet. I'm sure this information is available somewher, but we just can't find it - what is the Northern most route on sealed roads? We don't want to go off-road, but want to see that part of Australia that is not that well known.
Hi EW - probably look for the Savannah Way - it is a made road - and a very interesting trip - Small towns - Undarra Lave Tubes, train rides - and good current map will help you pl.an your trip - or purchase Camps Australia issue 9 - maps, camp spots etc.

From Cairns - Atherton Tablelands - Kennedy Highway - turn off for Mt Surprise etc through to Normanton - turn south to Cloncurry - west to Barkly Homestead.
You then have a choice - north to Cape Crawford, west again to the Stuart Highway at Daly Waters.
Or west from Barkly Homestead to Three Ways, then north to Darwin. Which of those is best would depend on time of year.
All sealed. Some are "development type roads - i.e. one lane of sealed road.
