Advice on insuring my motor home

H all, I have been getting great advice re buying my first motor home. I think I have it all sorted now, ready for the decission next week.

I will need insurance before I drive it away.

What is the best way to go about this, best company etc. Any advice would be much appreciated

Yes heâs half the price of NRMA . Even though we have 8 policies with NRMA. They wonât match. So I guess I should consider a full change and save over all ..

Agree.

Would also look at Roadside Breakdown cover in addition to the above, dirty diesel or a faulty sensor, 200, 300 or 1000Km from a service center and your vehicle has to be Flat Trayed/low loader will cost $1000's look at joining the NRMA or maybe the RACV.

Be aware, that the 1st premium quote is just to suck you in, we insured with one of the above, and had an incident where our vehicle door was kicked in, while it was in a car park. while the repairs were done OK and all sorted, the repair costing $1730. When our premium renewal came, we had been degraded from 1 to 3 in our no claims bonus, the premium had gone up by over $900, i.e. over half the cost of the repair, and they had down graded our insured value by $9650.
Taken out insurance with RAC, cost less together with ultimate roadside assist.

 Hi Landcruiser

Have a look at the below link, it takes you to another page of this website

http://thegreynomads.activeboard.com/t62502773/insurance-motorhome-july-2016/

These were the prices when I done my searching in July 2016

As a summary I found that CMCA with Ken Tame, and CIL were compatible, but for my situation CIL was better

I picked up reading the fine print that if a non-member of CMCA was driving the vehicle, then the vehicle was uninsured
For my situation I sometimes drive to Perth for medical reasons, and if I am unable to drive home, I will have the son in law, or grandson drive my RV home

The fine print was still there in the CMCA PDS (Product Disclosure Statement) in July 2017

In 2016 someone mentioned YOUI to me, after I had insured my motorhome
This year I looked at YOUI also
I picked up that their towing distance was very limited, and then you paid for the rest of the tow
With my home base in the west, if I required a tow before I reached the east, I would be paying for a lot of towing

Hope that this info is useful to you but as we are all different, it may pay for you to read the PDS of all insurers, to make sure they are applicable to your situation

Hi Ian

I agree that RAC (here in the west) is the best insurer, (I was with them for about 50 years), and the wife is still with them

Unfortunately for whatever reason, they no longer insure motorhomes, I last checked a few months ago

The roadside assist is an optional extra - See link   Terms and conditions.

The statement above is incorrect...............

Our vehicle is insured with the CMCA and it is my understanding, that the intention of the Insurance policy is to provide comprehensive vehicle cover regardless of who is driving the vehicle providing said person has permission and consent of the owner and normal road rules were ah-eared to. In the example above what is not covered for son-in law is the CMCA Member Benefits eg Medical assistance Claims. A phone call to KTA will confirm this, if you are in any doubt make the call do not rely on my say so.

And I admit, the wording in the PDS could be a lot better.

Not wishing to get into any bun fights, Peter in SA

They must be loosing a lot of custom, due to the wrong wording in their PDS

The picture is page 29 of the below link, which is Ken Tame Fully Comprehensive Recreation Vehicle Insurance PDS, as at 3 November 2017

https://www.kentame.com.au/images/pdf/RV_PDS.pdf

Ken Tame PDS.png

I was unaware that Roadside assistance is now an optional extra, Peter D, so thanks for that
I probably stopped reading the fine print, after double checking what was not covered
Next year I shall probably once again document my findings, (providing the wife does not automatically pay the bill when it arrives)

Do not know about the loss of business, only that the wording could be a lot better.

Re (I was unaware that Roadside assistance is now an optional extra)

This is Not correct, the Insurance policy comes with $1000 breakdown cover a year, up to $600 for the first time use and up to $400 the second.

What is Optional Is the Additional Breakdown Cover of from Memory $1500/year together with Doctors On Demand a service that you can Talk to a Doctor anywhere in Oz, get a script sent to a Chemist etc etc. There is a cost to this of $185 a year. This service costs significantly more if you are not a CMCA member.

Elders are good.
But we find. Combining all policies. Including Overseas insurance annually.
That the RACQ gives best of all covers.
For ALL covers.
Including a get you home section.
NOT cheap. But hey who wants to be a cheapskate and be stuck with a drained wallet in middle of nowhere.

Check your NEW car covers too.
My last NEW one was my last patrol March '02.

Nissan were THE ONLY Mfg (when you went through fine print.) That got YOU and veh to an
Authorised Nissan service agent,
FROM ANYWHERE in the Australian landscape.on made roads AND tracks.

NOT OFFROAD playgrounds.

EVEN the middle of SImpson. I had it added in writing to my original Nissan Warranty book

"Anywhere IN Australia on MADE roads and Tracks..
NOT just on gazetted roads.(as a lot restrict it to)

ALL the others had restrictions on distance from Metro. Size and\or weight of veh,

Over which. YOU paid contractor. BEFORE he loaded you.

NOT the van. That was usual restrictions,  Dist from Metro etc, as all others were.
But Hey. You're guaranteed to get veh fixed to go back and collect from whatever point it was.

That 3 yrs were the most relaxing. secure feeling drive I had with any veh I've owned.

Gday...

GEEZ Macka ... for a bloke wotz dun so much in ya life, ya sometimes seem to have led a bit of a sheltered, cloistered (?), narrow (?), blinkered (?) life in some ways. hmm

Your beloved Nissan are definitely NOT the only manufacturer to provide good retrieval service.

Land Rover, for one, provide a coverage for retrieval to an authorised agent or dealer if 'not able to proceed' as long as on any road/surface that is accessible by a 2WD vehicle. No mention of 'gazetted road'. [Please do not make misplaced senseless comment about LR and reliability]

Not up Schidt Creek, mind you, or some VIC High Country 4x4 track but accessible by 2WD recovery vehicle.

I would be fairly confident there are other manufacturers that are similarly sensible.

It is great to see you often readily share your broad knowledge and experience ..... BUT .... please get ALL the facts right before you share what so often is just an opinion.

Cheers - and put the feet up, pop ya meds and have another swig of that single malt   - John

This was back in '02 John.

In those days I went through them I was interested in. Nissan. Mitzi, Toyota. for tugs.
thoroughly. Just out of interest.

All but Nissan then had Radii on retrieval distances.(Gazetted roads includes as LOT of dirt roads too Graded and un graded)

Plus daughter and her boyfriend worked in Engine plant in Adel for Mitzi.
DON'T buy for towing. they have a small cars G.Box innards in there.

And Landies Safe with me.
I've had a Ser 1. 2. 2a. ALL shorties. Petrol and diesel.

BEST 4wd on any roads. ANYWHERE.
Only reason I had patrols were More comfort. and better tug for bigger vans\Boats.

Plus. THE most reliable on the roads. then and now.

PS. ALL my comments are such.
OPINIONS. With past experiences intermingled in there for interest.

Not even I... Know everything.. YET.

Chuckle.
