Insurance Motorhome July 2016

Usual disclaimer that I am not associated with any Insurance companies

Thanking other members who advised me to look at the fine print when my Motorhome Insurance became due.
Can not find the post but from memory it was Bruce and Bev, and others who pointed the way, so thanking everyone for that
Dougwe pointed out that some Private Health Insurers, also offer Recreation Vehicle Insurance, but my Health Insurance GMF (Goldfields Medical Fund) do not, so I did not go down that road.

The following four Insurers have the common items in their quote

  • They were all advised that I was contacting other RV (Recreation Vehicle) Insurers, and that I was not trying to get them to beat each others quotes.
  • Apart from the Insurer I was already using, I advised the other three that I had found their names while surfing the Grey Nomads Forums website
  • Agreed value of $60,000
  • No claim bonus of 65%
  • Free windscreen
  • Hire car after theft of Recreation Vehicle

Note
That as you have to be a member of CMCE to receive, and be covered by the Ken Tame Insurance, I had added the first year membership ($60), to the original quote. If you were already a member of CMCA it would have been the cheapest Insurance but... if the driver is not a member of CMCA then the Recreation Vehicle is not insured.

I obtained the Ken Tame quote, by advising them that, although I was not a member of CMCA, I would join if decided to obtained their insurance.

I have not put this up to start any sort of bun fight, but to show what is available, and for others to do their own due diligence, as for all I know, there may be other Recreation Vehicle Insurers out there.

Very interesting comparison.
The other consideration is how claims are handled and how you are treated during the process.

Without naming names there are two companies on your list that have been around a long time insuring recreational vehicles and are tried and proven.
I think it's fair to say that the annual premium is only part of the big picture when it come to insurance.

Ken Tame also provide up to $1,000 a year in breakdown cover, which helps, if your Motorhome/Campervan/Tandem Van needs to be flat tray in to be fixed and your Rxx? Organisation only pays a small part of the cost (when say 100+Km out of town)even when you are on the top breakdown cover.

Note, other insurers mentioned may also do this.

Hello montie

I am sure that you are correct

I have no experience of making a motor vehicle Insurance claim, as my last one was when I was a teenager, after hitting a Kangaroo, just over fifty years ago

I am led to believe, so I could be wrong, that all four Insurers mentioned, are reputable companies

Hello PeterInSa

That is correct Ken Tame do offer that service

All the three Insures with Yes under the Tow to mechanic column, offer the same service, with same price ceiling.
The Insurer with No in that column do not offer to tow your vehicle to a mechanic, after a mechanical breakdown

Perhaps I should have been clearer and put Tow to mechanic after mechanical breakdown of motorhome as the heading, but it would have upset the table, with a long heading

Hi Tony Bev,
I dont know whether you have committed yet but I suggest have a look at Youi, I got a very good deal from them on my caravan (see thread I started) and reading the fine print have no reason to believe they are better or worse than any of the others.
Cheers Vince

Hello vince56

I had already committed in early July, just before I went on a trip

Thanks for that advice, perhaps I will look at them next year

But... being the lazy man I am, I will most likely stick with the one I picked, as I was with RAC for fifty years, until I purchased the motorhome, which they do not cover.

G'day Tony E,

I think you will find that the Ken Tame policy covers all drivers.

It is only the extra CMCA benefits that would not apply if being driven by a non CMCA member.

Might be worth a phone call to them to clarify!

Regards,

Ian

Hello normadz

Thank you for that advice, it is appreciated, but I had already selected, and purchased my Insurance policy in July
Being a lazy type of man, I do not go on the internet whilst travelling, this is why my post concerning motorhome Insurance is a bit late

Page 28 of Ken Tame PDS (Product Disclosure Statement)

Here is the link

Quote
We do not cover you if, at the time of any loss, damage or event giving rise to liability, costs or expenses, the vehicle (including replacement vehicle or substitute vehicle) was:

3.

Use by a Non Member of CMCA being driven by you, or any other person:

a.

where you are no longer a current financial member of CMCA, or

b.

where the vehicle is loaned to a non financial member of CMCA.

We will not however refuse a claim for theft of or  accidental physical loss or physical damage to the vehicle, caravan or trailer, towing costs as a result of an accident, general average costs during sea transportation, windscreen or window breakage and legal liability for property damage only where a. and b. above apply.
Unquote

It is possible that I have interpreted the above wrongly
But... there is enough doubt in my mind to convince myself that it would be prudent, to make sure the driver is a paid up CMCA member

Hello kiwijim

From memory, so I could be wrong, when I went online for a quote, I only saw ACT, NSW, QLD, and TAS, as the states they give a quote.

I did not go any further as I live in WA
