CARAVAN sAFETY FROM AL-CO WEBSITE

I just stumbled across this from the AL-Co web site.

Very informative especially for new caravanners.

Its a long read but well worth it.

Hi Abner,

I can't comment. However after a lot of back room negotiations out van was fixed, and fixed right. It only took 3.5 weeks after been taken back to Victoria at their expense.

Live and learn. We were happy to walk with a full refund.nonono

That's a comprehensive guide alright.

It should be given to ALL purchasers of. BEFORE buying.
Maybe handed out at caravan shows and at ALl dealers. Both new and second hand.

Plus ALL potential buyers should HAVE to take a towing course (Unless truckie etc)
B4 able to buy such.
THEN.
Most importantly... Take your van out on quiet roads. Shopping car parks.
Practice backing from ALL angles as well as straight.

That's not as easy as it looks either.
Try backing along some cones sometime while both keeping them alongside you
and weaving through them. Backwards.

Sway control and braking.
Do it ALL (on quiet roads.)
Get to know both YOUR, and the rigs Capabilities.
preferably before, or while doing your travelling.

It's a lifelong learning curve.
bad habits appear without you realising.
I take an advanced truck driving lesson\test\check me out . Voluntarily.
every ten yrs or so.
Just to get myself polished up and habits identified.
We ALL have them.

When the day comes he says I'm no longer safe on rd.
I'll hang up my badge and start push bike touring.
The same bloke has done me for 40 yrs.
He's a mate and tells me what's what. (specially last yr.)

"Slow down prick. Remember what's on the back".
there's people here. I was doing 43\44 in a 40 zone. (near empty main st.)

"Apart from that everything fine. Just watch YOUR speeds in town". Coffee time at your place.
(he likes the view over the islands.)

We ALL have them. Habits.. Get them identified. Makes YOU a better driver.
$60\80 for an hrs info on your habits (as long as you drive AS PER YOUR NORMAL during it).

Is worth every penny.

The more compatible you are with each other. You and Rig.
The safer YOU are to others on the road.

Interesting point: "Fill your water tank/s " prior to departure. that takes 180 kg out of the nominated 400kg for tandem axle( normal setup these days) load allowance. Bit like NBN, no one thinks of Unintended Consequences. cheers Craig. But a general good read and refresher

Don't know about you Craig.
But I travel with empty tanks. Always have done.
Have a 10 ltr in car, does us on the daily travel cycle.

Fill tanks either when we arrive.OR at last fuel stop\town b4 turning off main road.
I had 2 x 90l plus an 80l Stainless for drinking only I made up.
Plus evolved to another 60\70?lWhich I added for grey b4 selling.

People travel so close to limits nowadays. They NEED all the help they can get.

If they were to de-evolve, to smaller vans again. It would be soooo much easier.

Ne=er mind. Highways will sort a few.

I travel with empty tanks too.  As we rarely free camp I rarely have to fill them.

The link provides a mountain of generally very good information.   Should be compulsory reading for new vanners & also informative to 'old know it alls' like me.

I sent the link to SWMBO ....  for reading from her iPad.  It'll be interesting to see her reaction.
