Brickies, I'm with you. Best thing to do, especially if you have a compromised immune system. I have seen a lot of people filtering and using water from creeks, upstream could be dead animals, mine sites or other farm or industrial chemicals.

Yep could be nice clean water too up that proverbial creek ,
But I digress if you have as darmac says a compromised immune system by all means be very careful but otherwise I think we sometimes get a little precious about water but I guess that depends on where you have lived and what you have drank before , geees as kids we used to through dead birds n stuff in the water tanks at school and no one got crook, but then no one had heard of asthma either and I can't remember a single person who had an allergy too anything , well school work might be an exception there .

thats not say we shouldn't be careful just the same

Gee I'm glad I grew up back in the 60s n 70s .

I am with Brickies on this one, in regards to the bottle water

It would not be pleasant to get gastro problems while travelling

Also, we only hear of the water contamination, after the event had happened

I grew up in the 40's & 50's and there was the popular saying 'running water purifies itself every ? ? yards'.

We drank from any river source, tried to go upstream from stock water points, while out shooting birds to roast for lunch (called dinner then) stolen citrus for desert.

We drink whatever water comes out of the tap but do have an on tap filter that we use when we remember.

Cupid, a couple of years ago I was on a field trip accessing the contamination of water in the Wild River at Herberton in FNQ. Like many others I had no idea of the extent of damage from disused mining sites. There are many towns that have unexplained clusters of illnesses. Some of which could be caused by high levels of arsenic and other chemicals that have found there way into our waterways. Good article on the web about the Wild River and the issues from mining.   See Herberton  Remediation Project.

Like you, growing up in rural environment we swam in creeks and dams totally oblivious to what may have been in the water. I have learnt a lot over the years.

Best to be safe than sorry

Got Hep A in Northern NSW about 15 years ago because I drank water straight out of the tap in a motel. Only staying overnight I missed all the notices about boiling water first. Hot day. Just wanted a cool drink. The water was contaminated after a bushfire raged thru the water catchment area killing wildlife. First shower of rain washed all the decaying animals into the water storage. Macedon Ranges then had same problem (my domestic water supply at the time). Been wary ever since. Take bottled drinking water ever since even if it's from home and OK.
