FNQ is still very popular and growing apparently...

Gday...

http://www.cairnspost.com.au/lifestyle/far-north-queensland-a-favourite-hot-spot-for-grey-nomads-and-travelling-families/news-story/c5b0e88f40ab631900e3ae3790c7ea57

But it is interesting that they show a photo of a GN at Green Patch south of Gordonvale. These campers seem to be set up for a day or two.

Gordonvale 01.JPG

Here's some info I have dug out that suggests this is at best an overnight only rest area ... or a no camping area hmm How does it get to be in a newspaper article suggesting wonderful things by GNs and campers...

http://www.cairnspost.com.au/business/camp-ground-owners-feel-pinch-from-freeloading-greenpatch-visitors/news-story/5ec7471b59a1eba5dc6249ff9bdcbd56

Talk about conflicting advice/reporting on the availability of camping and welcome visitation by campers. hmm no

Cheers - John

YEP.

And THAT......................................

Is the reason so many NICE spots get taken off the list.

Completely self inflicted.

The Top End and the Territiry.
ARE the cream on the cake in this country.

Trust them bloody SOutherners to brag and stuff it up for all.

No wonder we don't tell than ALL our spots hey.

No different to the ones that come with big freezers and outfish all the Yabby spots in our lakes.
Freeze 'em down and take 'em back down South.

Thopse pricks are NOT welcome up here. At any time.

They even dumb enough.
that they wait for local fish to form Breeding schools. and that thick. Braindead.
they then take thousands of fish out of them.

then boast. hey. GREAT fishing this time of yr isn't it.
Wondering in a few yrds whilee the stocks are decreasing DRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

Brainless, Then some hey.

How many others do you see,
Supposed to be 3 or 4 days.
and the residents. There EVERY yr. Blocking it off from entry. stay for months.

We saw it one yr we went through North of Rocky. Nice little spot. 3 day stopover.

They'd been there for months. So several of us went through every day after the third. (Date stamped on Camera's).

Took shots of all each arvo. after a week or so.
Took them down to Council.
Several saw us each day and moved on.

I'd like to think somebody there got it together.
and gave them all several Parking tickets each. at $175 a pop.

That's what it needs.
The person who took them said she'd pass on to Parking infringement dep'tment.

More ammunition for those wanting to force people to PAY to use their CPs. Do these fools not understand they are making it hard for themselves, as well as those who want to do the right thing when cheap camping?

Does anyone really believe anyone under 59 would visit this site? Any self respecting kid with an XBox under the bed and a Play Station in his (or her) desk is not going to be looking for pictures of Nakerd ladies on a caravan forum.

Gday...

Apologies to all .............

I now find the two articles I provided the links to in this post now only take you to a 'subscribe' site so you cannot read the article and understand the point of the post. cry

The first link was from today's Cairns Post highlighting how wonderful it is, and how proud they all are, that tourist numbers are up about 19% over previous years ... with the biggest increase in "international drive" and "domestic drive" tourists - ie backpackers and GNs.

They made no mention of free campers or camping areas, only van park and other accommodation usage, but included in the article was the pic I posted - that of a happy old phart with beer in hand and a row of RVs behind him that looked like they had been set up, or were intending to be there, for a couple of days.

That article had no whinge or even a comment about GNs or others camping - free or otherwise - just a photo of an old phart.

It just prompted me to do some research on the camp "Green Patch south of Gordonvale" for interest and maybe to keep in mind for the future.

It was then that I found out that it is only a day-use area apparently with some overnight rests tolerated. I dug a bit further and found the second article that I provided the link to. That too now only goes to a 'subscribe site'. hmm

That article was published in July 2017 and was about how GNs and backpackers and others were mistreating the area, leaving it filthy, staying for days on end .... all at the expense of local van parks. Indeed it shows very clearly pics of No Camping signs at Green Patch Rest Area near Gordonvale with damage to toilets, paper and rubbish left all over the place. Locals, residents, van parks and the community were aggravated and were lobbying council to sort out the problem ... or close the rest area.

The point of my post, completely missed now because the links did not take you to any information for context, was to highlight that in July this year, the locals etc were incensed at "international drive" and "domestic drive" tourists mistreating, overstaying and abusing the rest area, and the community's hospitality, with their actions.

However, by September the Cairns Post either ignorantly or foolishly, publish an article praising and celebrating the "international drive" and "domestic drive" tourists for their wonderful patronage.

Hence my comment "Talk about conflicting advice/reporting on the availability of camping and welcome visitation by campers." at the conclusion of the original post.

Again, apologies for what has turned out to be a bit of a confusing thread. no

Cheers - John

Gday...

I think ya in the wrong thread Iza

However, I assume you were talking about the "Twins" post that has now been swallowed by the ether.

I also assume you are not aware of the "Unfortunate Twins Saga" of times past ... if you were you would understand why that post was unfortunately inappropriate - not just for its risque pic but because it would (did?) stir up painful memories from when this forum was being torn apart by overly zealous members directing their mis-placed angst at other members and admin.

Some scars leave lasting memories for some. hmm

Anyway, cheers and keep safe travellin' - John

Greenpatch must be the rest area I stopped at which had toilets but was clearly marked with no camping signs. There was barely room to park for a toilet stop as there were quite a number of motorhomes and a few Caravans which looked a bit comfortable plus probably about 6 backpacker tents which had set up on the lawn behind the fence. I was surprised as this stop wasn't marked in my Camps book and quite a few ppl were obviously staying. It was still morning when I got there so it probably got more popular in the afternoon. I wouldn't have been happy if there was nowhere to park as loos in that area are few and far between. This is what happens when there are no other options for those on a budget.

Hello rockylizard, up until last year this area was "mostly" used by wicked campers and the like. However it is slowly turning into a free for all camp. The area was not huge, however, large rocks and bollards appear to have been removed. Recently, a 5th wheeler, towed by a large American vehicle was there for approx . 4 weeks. A bit more than an overnight rest area. I am not sure what happens to their grey water and to my knowledge the only dump point is in Cairns. Could be a real health hazard in the hot weather.
There is a free camp at Babinda and Rocky Creek on the Atherton Tablelands with a low cost park at Bramston Beach.
If this area is abused, I am sure the Council will have no choice to close it down.
And yes, The Cairns Post has followed a lot of major Newspapers and gone digital, however you can find some local news on google news. Not that there is much to read.
Thank you for your posts I always look forward to reading your comments.
Enjoy your travels

As others have said, and I completely agree

It is ammunition, for someone to decide to have the free camps closed down, when people stay in no camping areas, and/or leave a free camp in a filthy condition

I have no sympathy for anyone who gets fined, for staying at a no camping area

Unfortunately all of us Grey Nomad type people, are all tarred with the same brush

I have heard the saying, give something for free and it is not appreciated

This is not so, I and a lot of others, appreciate that we do have free camps, and clean up rubbish that some not so responsible people, leave behind

There are still plenty of smaller towns, which appreciate our patronage

rockylizard, the council have replied and a good outcome may be resolved. The Council are preparing an Improvement Plan for Green Patch, however the land is under State Government Control, so it may take a while.   If there is a change of State Government next year, it may take longer!!!

At one time there were "No Camping " signs, however, on the National Public Toilet Map, the area is shown as a campground. How confusing is that?

Watch this space

The North Queensland is better known as God's Country.
And rightly so.
Just have a look at the weather down south at the moment.
Like I have reported many times previously.
The only place you can find winter in North Queensland is in the
DICTIONARY.

Any wonder that the folks from south of the border head north for the winter and the best Australia has to offer.

Totally agree with you. It does get very hot and humid for a few months, yet if you plan you days you will live with it. There are plenty of houses for sale in Cairns. Just expect to pay high insurance and electricity, no major traffic jams and less pollution.
You can be in the Rainforest, and within an 1-2 hours be in the Savannah.
Australia is so diverse, so many beautiful places all with positives and negatives.
Safe travels
