There's loads of great info on this site, so hoping someone can help me with some recommendations. I'm driving from Melb to Townsville in a couple of weeks time for some fishing. I'm hoping to do the trip in 3-4 days so I'm not looking at sight seeing along the way. I'll be towing a 4m boat so I don't want to end up on dirt roads. I'm planning to stay overnight in rest stops. Can someone please recommend the best route given the road conditions etc at the moment? regards Glenn.

The quickest in IMO is via Hay, Hermidale, Walgett, St George, Surat, Roma, Rolliston, Emerald, Charters Towers then slip into Townsville.
The other way is similar and via Cobram, Parks, Walgett then as above.
Me, I like the major highways really and have friends along the way so always good to catch up with them so go via Hume Hwy, Paciffic Hwy and Bruce Hwy. I find all three excellent to travel on but is slower and you wanting to do it in 3-4 days might not suit. If I was to go my way without visits I can do in 2 days Hume, 3 days both Paciffic and Bruce without too much pain.

We did that run regularly.
Last solo run in Patrol 12 yrs ago. 29 1\2 hrs. One kip on side of rd.
(ex Truckie, SIngle Sailor. Used to long hrs.)
Best way we found. for a straight through run and not bothered about seeing things.
Is Melb to Newell H'way.
Follow that right through till it connects to Leichardt H'Way.
Follow your nose to Capricorn H'Way
Then left to Emerald. Charters etc.
Or Right to Rocky. and up Bruce to T'Ville.
Easy. as it's a straight run most of the way. NO diversions.
One long road once you on the Newell..
I lived in T'Ville (Garbutt). Di lived in East Bentleigh. Was a Regular run for coupla yrs.
Put a ruler on a map and join Melbourne to Townsville. I think you'll find that most of the suggestions pretty much follow the ruler. Last time I went Townsville - Melbourne, I went Charters Towers, down to St. George, across to Moree and straight down the Newell. Stopped at the Nindigully Pub for pint (free camping in front of pub and beside river). However, get fuel at every stop, don't try to stretch your luck.
