satellite dish.

Good afternoon fellow forum members,i am in the process of purchasing a portable satellite dish with the VAST decoder,

my question is what do members do at night time after they have finished using theirs,do you take it apart, store it,

or just leave it outside and hope it doesn't go missing? What do you think i should do?cheers.smilesmile

We have had our portable dish for 5 years and all I do is to secure the dish to the van by a steel wire cable. (Some use chains ) We have never had it touched.

Hi Subaru,

I always leave the dish setup until I am ready to move on. I always stake the tripod into the ground and ensure all the nuts and bolts are done up tightly. Never had a problem. You could always chain the dish to something if you are concerned.

same hear go to local bolt supply and get a stainless cable made up from 3.2 balustrade cable, double swag and thimble the ends. should only cost about $15-$20 for one about 6m long.

This  question has been aired again and again in the years I have been part of this Forum.

I am always interested in hearing the replies.   I  have never lost anything ever when camping other than forgetting to load it and driving away.  Lost my Sat Dish Tripod once  two years ago. Left it in the Keep River NP  pegged into the ground.  Had actually stowed the Dish but probably got sidetracked and drove away from the tripod.  Only realised a week later  where I had last used it.  It was about 30 metres from the van at that camp, the other side of trees.

Sometimes the Solar portable panel is a distance from the van, also the Sat dish is frequently 20 metres away to catch the signal.

I have never had anything stolen while camping, of course if I am unsure of a camp and the area feels a bit iffy, leaving stuff outside does not happen.

Camped extensively in the UK, NZ, USA, Europe,  and never had anything stolen.  So I first went camping  about  1957 as a kid, and still doing it.  I suppose I have been fortunate.  But often asking this same question of friends in our Avan Club and they seem to have the same  luck as me.

SO FAR.

too much trouble setting it up to take it down each night so we leave ours out , pegged to the ground - it may be 10 mts from the van. But as we only have it out when we are staying a week or more usually in a camp with other like minded people and have never heard of anyone having it stolen. A security cable is OK if its near enough to attach it to something secure but sometimes reception can only be obtained some distance from the van.

When we used it.
I carried a 1 1\4 S\S tube (offcut from Yacht Handrails) mounted on
drawbar of vans. with 2 x 5\8th from there bolted to front frames of the gas bottles.

Here's a piccy. Expand and have a look.

Dish travelled on bed with cats and TV.
Otherwise mounted to tube. Cable going in front side of van. Under the Roadstar name.

If   the satellite is clear in view from the van (no obstructions) we have a short aluminium mast for the dish.  Locks into place  in front of the Gas Bottles. Clipped in  with overcentre catches.  Also sets up on the rear of the van the same way.
