We have lots of real refugees that have come thru the front door around Ballarat area and have had since we settled the Baltic states in the area after WWII. Even many that have been Okayed in recent years. It's finding the real ones from the fakes that is hard.
At Kaniva, the (Burmese?) refugees are all working on duck farms as apparently they are good duck farmers.
My both grandmothers were members of a group called the Good Neighbour Council (one handled the Catholics, one the others incl Orthodox) and I used to tag along with them welcoming new refugees and finding things that they needed. Co-incidently my French teacher (who spoke multiple languages) was often used as an interpreter.
