Apparently some are unaware of this...."if grey water is stored for longer than 12 to 24 hours it breeds toxic levels of bacteria, and is classed as black water."

Waste water from showers and washing machines (undies) contains small amounts of fecal matter and thus E coli bacteria.

Good reminder Ron.
Fecal matter is everywhere - our rainwater tanks collect possum/fruit bat, bird droppings aplenty and we drink the stuff in preference to town water. Personally I'd prefer to be exposed to traces of it to allow my body to learn how to cope with it. Many homes also store grey water and pump it to the garden when needed. Every thing in moderation however!!

The minute amounts in shower and sink water would be of no significance in the great scheme of things. Especially when you consider all the animal droppings all over the place including in and around our rivers.

I was once advised by a scientist at work that after an hour in the sun the waste would all be sterile anyway.

Still we are considerate of where we let our grey water run.

In NZ apparently it's the grey water from the kitchen sink containing food particles that's the issue, not the shower water, that requires all vans to be self contained.

I would think most RV kitchen Sink would have a food strainer plug , Ours have one and we collect the food particles and put them in waste bin not down the sink .

We collect food thru the strainer too but it's food that isn't scraped off the plates after the original clean but comes off with the actual wash that the Kiwis are worried about (sauce, salt & pepper etc). Seem to think that is more damaging to the bottom of their food chain (insects) than soap/detergent. At least that is what I was told by a Kiwi at Moree who was about to set his van up to take it back to NZ.

Are people going over the top with this grey water thing, for gods sake caravan parks welcome it as a rule , I clean my paint rollers on the front lawn and the grass loves the stuff,this silly do Gooder over the top crap annoys me, sink and shower water is harmless, of course I will come under attack for this, I guess some people just have to promote this stuff to prove there enviromental ideas even Though it's Rubbish...

It's only because the stupid idea of that silly Motor home club

they stuffed it up for many many people so we have to carry grey water tanks
And all they do as soon as they leave open the tap to the grey water tank and leave other people with the nasty smell
I've seen it happen was not fast enough to grab a phone to take the Pr...cks number plate
Indeed most caravan parks would love you to leave it on there lawn
Nothing wrong with letting your shower or kitchen water going on to the lawn
There are many many houses that have a system like were you spray your grey water over the back yard

During the drought in Vic about 10 years ago, people were climbing under their house and putting small holes in all but their toilet pipes to keep ground damp and stop the foundations from collapsing.

 There is obviously quite a divided opinion on this matter.

Knowing Australia's love for regulations I see it only as a matter of time before the release of grey water in CPs and Free Camps is prohibited - whether we like it or not.

Perhaps something for manufacturers of new vans to consider.

Only issue I can see is some pouring milk or fats down the sink . In most cases the detergent acts as wetting agent and helps rain or water saturate the ground better . Cows poop in the paddock, with in approx a month they are back in eating the grass again ! Yes the suns rays kill bacteria. In compost bacteria breeds and eats away changing the food into good soil, with the help of decomposing warmth etc . Yes you want to be a (dairy) farmer these days !! All the BS they have to go through !! Often bought up by people who have NEVER worked a hard day in their lives !!

 Two incorrect, narrow minded and naive statements. Just a little bit of research may surprise you both. 

PS. I have no agenda, just a desire to understand.

Definition of 'Blackwater' obtained from Wikipedia:- ""Blackwater is the mixture of urine, feces and flushwater along with anal cleansing water (if water is used for cleansing) and/or dry cleansing materials. Blackwater contains the pathogens of faeces and the nutrients of urine that are diluted in the flushwater."[

As very few Australians practice anal washing at the time of excreting, anal cleansing water is introduced via the shower drain. In simple terms - if you wash your bum in the shower the water is black. The same applies for washing soiled underwear. Of course if you do not wash your butt and never have skid marks then none of this applies to you - it is a 'furphy', shower water is harmless.

Whether or not we agree with grey water disposal the powers to be will push for it and we unfortunately fall in line...personally i fitted a tank just to comply and no other reason... Being able to stop where i want without drama was all i cared about... Maybe i'm another sheepno
