Being newbies to the wonders of Australian walkabout, we would really appreciate some advice. We want to travel from Threeways to Townsville in August 2017. Our rig is a twin axle Royal Flair 22ft with off-road tyres pulled by a 2016 Ford Ranger XLT. Is the road Tarmac all the way and is there fuel at all the towns/stops? Is this a foolish quest? Do we need to carry fuel or water?
Welcome EW - No such thing as a foolish question - yep sealed all the way and a pretty good road, we did it in 2015.
Some interesting stops along the way, check out 'the drovers camp' just east of Camooweal - think there's a festival coming 25th August that gets a lot of visitors and has been recommended to us. Good free camp there just west of the town on a river. Ravenswood and the Burdekin Dam also nice places for a stop over. You shouldn't need to carry fuel, shops in most of the towns have basics. As for water, depends how much you use and how long you'll take. We showered in Mt Isa at the servo where we bought fuel and also filled up with water there. We really liked Charters Towers - good range of shops.
