I am new to this site and hopefully you will be able to help me and my family who are travelling from Melbourne to Darwin. We came from UK but now live in awesome Australia and want to explore it. I have my wife and 8yr old daughter. We have a camping trailer that is basic but want to improve it.
My question is that we are planning the trip over Christmas and will take around 3 weeks going up the east coast. What sort of places should we seek out along the way and where to stay.
We have already done coastal route to sydney so happy to get there quickly for more time further along.

Make sure you pop in here from time to time and let us know how you are travelling etc .
If you get as far as the Gold Coast and with your 8 year old in mind a visit to Movie World is always good as is Sea World where she can swim with the Dolphins. My youngets daughter did it when she was 8 and still remembers the excitment to this day. A little further north and the Sunshine Coast area, a visit to Australia Zoo is a must do and I tell you that for free. I was there about two months now and as an old fart had agreat day.
You could read my 'April' update in 'Members Blogs' as I went into detail about the zoo there.
Much further north and Townsville you could visit Reef HQ, another great place for young and old.

Don't forget it will be hot at Christmas - even at night!. Wrong side of Aussie to give you much other info.
Welcome . In Vic I assume your thinking of going caravan . ? Must say from centre up a good camper trailer with hard floors are very common given the warmer weather and lighter trailer to pull . Decisions on water, battery storage, toilet, shower etc depending if you stay in camping grounds .
Hi yes our camper trailer is light and small but big enough for us. Yes we need a power system that will allow us off the grid so in the event we have to stop we will still be ok. Thanks
Tomsky71 what sort of advice are you looking for , Is it the route to take or place to visit and where to stay , 3 weeks is not a lot of time for this sort of trip , How many klm would you be traveling a day .

Hi there, we are looking at around 300-350km a day but we are doing a straight run to Sydney first before our first stop. Then it's a simple case of see where we get to for each leg. It's a case that if there is anything that we really want to see. The reason we are going is that we are moving up there so it's a bit of a holiday on route to our new place in Darwin.
All make sense now . I take you want to see the east coast of Australia , If I was leaving Melbourne for Darwin ,I would go up the Newell Hwy To Queensland and explore Central and western Australia with lots of free camps , Going up the east coast you still have to detour in the coastal area has not much of the highway is on the coast , I would do your research on what you want to look at on the east coast has you wont have to much time to look at everything , Free camping limited on the coast , It is very hard to tell you what to look at has we all like different things and you will need to do things your 8 year old like , Are we there yet how many times do we hear that .

Welcome from me too. Just a question - how far up the coast are you intending to go before heading inland to go across to Darwin? There is quite a bit of open space between towns up that way. Our next bigger trip will be up the Qld coast so, as yet, cannot help you with information there. Another place on the Sunshine Coast you could visit is Sea Life - Mooloolaba (formally Underwater World). There is a butterfly house at Coffs Harbour NSW where you walk in amongst the butterflies. Enjoy your trip.
