DRIVING FROM SYDNEY - PT. MELBOURNE

Hello One & All!

Like many of you, we are on a southward bound journey, leaving Cronulla 4 August '17.  Hoping you could help me out as we have never driven along the coast before towing a c.van.  Where in the forum can I access this info also we would very much appreciate info. for safest & easiest routes on our way around Melbourne city to Pt. Melbourne as we are boarding the Spririt of Tasmania in Sept.  We will have to free camp/pull-up somewhere within area the night before to A.M. ferry, as the local c.van park has informed us that they do not accept dogs.

This is our first time on the ferry & never driven through/around Melbourne before, and even though we are looking at all available info....it is always lovely to have your suggestions aye!.......

Cheers Harry & Me

Hello Billabong (Harry & Me)

May I be one of the first to welcome you to the forum

As I am from the West, I have no knowledge of what you ask

Unfortunately not many come to this part of the forum

If you copy and paste in the General Forum, you will get more people looking at your questions

Hopefully others who have done the trip before, will then come along with their experience

If you get up Google earth, it will show a nice ,(possibly illega), but you only resting not camping,l beachside road park North of ferry terminal, about 10 minutes away. Toilets adjacent, no showers. Try to judge your arrival around 1/2 hour before boarding time, Dont be 1st in line. There is one low bridge in South Melb, but a pre plan Sat Nav would be advisable. Should be ok coming from East but. Great fish and chips in Stanley Tas, ( Hurseys at Big Crayfish). cheers

.

G'day Harry and me aka Billabong and welcome to the forum.  Don't forget to try the two ongoing games here - 'Who is This' in the 'I Digress' section and 'Pick this Place' in the 'General' Section - a great source to find new places to visit.  Sounds like you are well seasoned travellers.  Another sandgroper here so can't help re your question.

DRIVING FROM SYDNEY - PT. MELBOURNE

Welcome to the gang BILLABONG, enjoy here and out in the playground.

You could whip across to the Hume Hwy and down to Melbourne that way, maybe stay at Seymore for the night before, leaving in time to get to the good ship Spririt OR maybe consider going down the coast and Princes Hwy to Berwick show ground then next morning in time to North Rd, south of Melbourne then to Beach road and around to the good ship Spirit in time. Just be very careful of parking around the beach as the council boys and girls WILL book you.

I haven't been through those parts of Melbourne for many moons now so just check on the maps first. Mr Google can be very helpful.

Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

Welcome. Contact Spirit of Tasmania and they will provide a map of both north and south approaches to Port Melbourne. There are no nearby "legal" places to stop overnight. Enjoy your travels. Cheers

Try and avoid Westgate Freeway and Bridge, Melb towing a van from today 13/7/17 if you can, heaps of changes and narrow lanes due to road works etc. Just noticed it on the news here in down town Townsville.
