Well a few things to look at:

1. The tow bar rating with respect to max tow weight
2. Tow bar rating in relation to tow ball weight
3. ATM of van
4. Max tow weight for your RAV 4 if Toyota give one. Else the GCM, (gross combined mass = loaded vehicle plus loaded caravan), if Toyota gives one.

 Hi Ruth

Firstly welcome, at this point I would suggest seeing you have a 2017 model car obtain your drivers handbook and have aread of it, it will explain a few things like where fuses are, how much air to put in tge tyres etc.

Next take pen and paper walk around your car, there possibly will be a placcard on the tow bar hardware explaining the weighs towball & maximum towing.

Next the drivers door this snippet of information  could be there for you to read also, maybe next to the tyre placcard.

Now out of those 3 places you have gain maximum tow ball & gross combination weigh.

My bit of googling tells me Rav4 providing its a 4 cylinder one

tare weight of 1590kgs

Gross  weight 2150kgs

Gross comb   3630kgs

Max gross trl 1500kgs

Jayco Penquin tares 1100kgs max gross 1479kgs.

You would be towing close to the wind but do able providing the towbar has this marked on it.

But remember to read the specification of your car yourself to be 100% right.

And then read the soecs of the Penquin.

I could say rav would do the jod but I not.

The Penguin is a fairly light unit, you should be right to tow it after doing your sums. Enjoy!

Where did you glean those figures? I think you have the tare weight of the of the outback model, the OP did not mention it. The brochure figures states 895kg for the 2011 model and 960kg for the 2017 model. Also the 379 kg load you have given it is for vans with en-suites in them. No en-suite models have a 300 kg loading.

Ruth, you should have a well matched rig for your travells.

I gleaned these figures from the Jayco site. The OP did not mention to much at all,

The 2015 model somewhere between 960 and 1185kgs plus 300kg pay load with exceptions,

Now without complete information supplied by the OP we only can supply approx figures, max is better min at this point in time.

Without having all the details how could you say it will or will not do the job.

Hope you are going to have a day.

Yes the two figures are for the standard and off road models.  That's why I made mention that I thought the OP was only looking at the standard model and I based my recommendation around that.
