Areas where gold has already been found and where you can prospect legally. That is very much the general rule for those prospecting as a hobby.
Lots of stuff on the net including prospectors forums and the mines dept of each state is a good place to start.
Really DD did you forget your happy pills again today ?

Buy a nice bottle of single Malt or two and get nicely pissed.
99% of you will get more out of that.
I do Chuckle.
Only bloke I ever knew any profitable out of that game was 40 yrs ago. Owned 100 acres of land down South. Ran sheep on it. Plus poked around for gold and Opals.
Was Perfect Building sand under it for 80 ft or more.
Had a sand contractor build weighbridge. access, and office. Allowed him to haul it out at ???$$'s a ton over the scales. Leaving the rather large nice empty "Drive into" hole in the ground. ON main rd. WITH weighbridge ready installed, behind.
THAT eventuated as local Council dump. Which HE got paid ??$$'s a load\ton for, to fill it up again. All it cost him was revegetation afterwards.
over 20 yrs very nice income for a bit of sand and dirt to cover it.
THAT..., Is gold mining. Just different materials.
PS. He also did very well at fossicking and those Mine seeking things in the Noarlunga gorge behind them.
I went with him and Steve (SIL) coupla times when shooting foxes. Still have (I Think) my old pans in garage.
There is (Was) a fair bit there in '50's to '90's.. we came out with some every trip
My findings Paid for a pr of $2k ear rings for missus one yr. On 20th anniversary ('83).
More a dreamers game nowadays. Methink's.
The old "One day....Maybe" syndrome, hey.
enjoy it. Lots do.

Mike Harding, I didnt provide an answer to his question because I have never actually panned for gold, however, maybe like many others I am interested in helpful replies.
It is a bit rich that you are telling me that I am vetting comments with your comments above stating that in your words,
" ill conceived, ill presented and impossible to answer question"
Mike, if that is not vetting someones comments then at least some of us are wondering.
I do note that another member on here chose to start another topic with the OP's name in the topic so as to provide, at the least, an interesting story relating to fossicking for gold.
I see that the admin have edited the racial comments from one of the posts above. That is a good start.
I hope they keep it up and tidy this forum with editing similar to what they have done above so it may attract more diversified contributors that arent put off by the rambling of a minority that appear to be dragging the quality of this forum down to a point where good people do not want to contribute.
Cheers
