We have a 17 foot Jayco Journey on road caravan with 14 inch wheels. We have found that the stabilizers are too long as we have not been able to engage them properly, even on a concrete pad and on grass or dirt sites. We have found it necessary to dig holes on minimal sloping sites and even elevate the wheels on ramps to get extra height to be able to engage the stabilizers properly. Whilst we understand that 15 inch wheels would have given more height due to a carport height restriction we found it necessary to use the 14 inch wheels. We were not aware that this was going to be a problem. To fix this problem Jayco cut 20 mm off the stabilizers but this is insufficient. Jayco are now not prepared to do anything else as they continue to state that it has the correct stabilizers. Has anyone else had this problem with the Jayco Journey?
the on road Journey normally has the 14 inch wheels, so it probably does have the correct stabilisers on it from the factory.
When you put them down they should have a couple of angled settings that I would have thought would have been ok at most locations. You don't need to have them upright, as they are not designed to be wound down totally tight, just to touch the ground to prevent van rocking. If you do try and wind them down tight the winding mechanism can be damaged.
If you are not happy with them on an angle, it may be worth looking around for a couple of sets of corner wind jacks, that many vanners used to use, and get them to set up instead of the ones on the van. They look like an open pyramid, with a central screw column that can be tightened up to connect with the chassis.

Chaos, mayhem, confusion. Good my job here is done
when I bought my van, the Service Mngr banged on that you should be able to slip a piece on paper between the ground and the stabilizer legs when they are wound down. We often do as Ian, and many more do on uneven ground and "click" the legs into one of the angled positions - although you can sometime find the leg will scat across the ground and the use on a separate, usually plastic, plates are necessary - with the added advantage that most have a lip that can be filled with water to stop the dreaded ants

If your Van was ordered with 14inch wheels then you have been sold a product with incompatible stabilizers, I believe Jayco should fix the problem at their cost.
If it was my Van I would put everything in writing to the Dealer and Jayco, If no luck then as Macka said make a claim through Consumer Affairs and the ACCC.
Thats interesting info about not winding them down firm. I do especially on the front to take some of the weight from the jockey wheel. I will not do that again. Rod.
