I actually stayed at Peak Hill CVP and drove down to parks for a day trip. I tend to stay in smaller towns if I can.

I did the same, stayed at the Peak Hill CP worth it in the scheme of things and the old Gold Mine/Pit was worth a look. I did actually try parking up at  "The Dish" just outside Parkes but was moved on.

PS

In the main street of Peak Hill there is a place in town on the left heading South with old cars Lots of old stuff rusting away. Looks like some very interesting cars in there. I would love to know the story.

The showgrounds maybe: Tel: (02) 6862 2580

Mobile: 0431 391 849

However, I phoned to see if I needed to book, left a message and got a call back a week later. I was well past Parkes by then.

I stayed at Peak Hill Double D park at $26 per night. It's off the highway - left turn from Parkes - so rather quiet.

We camped at a free camp on an old stock route just near the dish. Very quiet and peaceful.
It's in wikicamps.

We stayed at Forbes. Very good park and delightful town. Drove up to Parkes, which was worthwhile.

Double D is a good stay. Clean, cheap, excellent camp kitchen and free pancakes for brekky. Would not hesitate to stay there again.
