We have been over that road number of times, went down to Batemans Bay in February towing our Caravan there was a section being improved, I think it would be close to being completed for the most not to bad at all.
Last year we come up the range twice, yes it is a bit windy and is a climb but nothing all that dramatic.
It probably is the best climb up and onto the table lands, there is not much choice, you could go up to Woolongong and then up or down to Melbourne and back up every where in between has a hill to drive over with corners. It lot easier these days with most of the corners being a bit more open and lines along the road to help guide you along.
Nothing wrong with the Clyde Mountain. It's better to take that stretch driving slowly than spending hours just to bypass it. Once you have done these types of hills a few times you wonder what all the fuss was about. You have been listening to the wimps not the seasoned drivers. Do some armchair driving.
Enjoyed the quick trip down the mountain PeterD, reminded me of Mario Cart. A bit worried about going up though in my "84 Coaster. Would struggle to get up to the 55km advised speed on some of the corners on the drive up. It was interesting that it only takes 2 minutes 12 seconds longer to go up than it does to come down. lol
Ray, you should have no problems getting up there. Just be content that you may have to use 1st gear for a few stretches. There are quite a few bends where you can slacken your speed and swing wide to allow the hoards of faster travellers to get past you. They are used to a few slow vehicles going up the hill, it's just the ignorant that stick to the centre line and don't let others pass that they despise.

Should not have a problem up the Clyde. I find it the easiest of the 3 mountains.
The mountain from Nowra to Mossvale via Kangaroo Valley is the worst, followed by Brown Mountain from Bega to Cooma.
A bit of advice don't attempt the Clyde on a long weekend in the ACT as the traffic is very heavy, drive to the conditions and you will be ok
