RE: Add your Computer tips here

Now for my tip. You had a half a dozen tabs open and you closed four of them and you want to bring them back to find the one you want. The shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+T so while you hold down the Ctrl and Shift keys together press the T key and each time you press the T key while holding down the Ctrl and Shift key you will bring back a tab until you bring back the four tabs or more tabs but if you have a slow computer then wait for each tab to open (you can let go of the keys) and do it again. If a page doesn't fully open then you will have to click reload on the page..

For Firefox users - Look to the "History" button in the menu at the top. There are many useful things there. Click on it and you will see a menu item "Recently closed tabs." When you hover the cursor over that you will see the last 10 tabs you closed. You can just click on any of those to restore one without going through the whole lot.

Below the recently closed tabs there is also "Recently Closed Windows" which will open windows you closed including those on previous days.

At the top of that drop down menu is the "Show all History." You can opt to show the history from - Today - Yesterday - Last 7 days - each of the last 5 months and Older than 6 months.

They are all handy features that I frequently use. You should find similar features in all the other browsers.

One thing I don't know what to do (and I would appreciate any input) is how to make a link on this forum active so that it can be clicked on without having to copy and paste or is that not allowed in this forum. A link such as this

http://windowsreport.com/synctoy-windows-10/

To make a link clickable, I put the letters url enclosed in square brackets[] immediately before the link, then put /url, again in square brackets, immediately after the link, e.g. [*url]http://windowsreport.com/synctoy-windows-10/[*/url] (omit the * in both instances).

Cheers, Joe

I have found those style of link where the URL is pasted straight into a message are unreliable. There is a link function at the top of where you are posting your message. This is the way I do it:

Don't use the "Quick Reply" window to compose your message, use one of the other three methods to insert a message. When you are read to insert the link construct a meaningful heading for the link that does not look it is pointing to his site. Also do not mention him or his books in your message. Then underline that heading using the underline function in the menu at the top. Next click on the chain link symbol in the middle line of the menu to bring up the "Insert/Edit Link" popup. Finish the job off by pasting the URL of the link into in the "Link URL" space and click "Insert." That brings up a link that generally does not alert Cindy that you are getting around her rules.

Thanks PeterD and Joe50 I just replied to this and it disappeared so I will try again I hope I am not double posting

Joe50 your method reminded me of a similar method I used to use years ago on another forum that I had forgotten I had to google to find it. Just replace the first bracket ( with a square one.

(url=http://windowsreport.com/synctoy-windows-10/]Synctoy[/url]

to give the link Synctoy

Thanks PeterD and Joe50 this is my third attempt to reply to this my first two attempts disappeared I had a bit of BB code similar to yours Joe50 that I used years ago on another forum and I now see it on the "Posting How-To" link just below the "Submit Post" Link so it must be allowed. I will see if this posts and I will try it again

This is my fifth attempt to post this link in all the previous ones I bolded underlined and coloured the word blue within the code (this has worked on another forum some years back) so if this posts then I had better not bold underline and blue the word. Here we go to the link SYNCTOY

Well I tried again two times and it is all within the "Posting How To" but I must have upset the forum rules somehow. I will wait for it to settle down and try again another time

EDIT: that worked so I will try again to see if I can post the code (I have tried so many times since your reply Santa even copying and pasting your code)

If your computer came with pre-installed operating system, use the option to create recovery disks.
If you hard drive fails, you can install a new drive and rebuild the operating system from the Recovery Disks

This is so frustrating I have tried so many times even copying and pasting your code Santa and I am locked out it deletes my post I then try and send a normal post without any code and it deletes it until I run CCleaner and also go in and delete all my cookies and only then will it let me make a normal post. I think I will have to contact Admin.

Belmont, lets be extra clear, I am neither a fanboi fo Windows or Apple. I make money from both but I can charge double my rate to Apple users Vs Windows users because Apple themselves do not fix any Apple products in Australia. There is only one official Apple store in each state, the rest are only dealers, but unlike most other computer shops, Apple will only supply product to resellers who are exclusively Apple.

1/ the MAC OS was originally developed for Apple by Microsoft and their current versions use much of the same original codebase as the current iterations of Windows, because they all were developed (since NT (1994)) from UNIX.
2/ Macs are no more secure than Windows. I see proportionately just as many Macs with nasties and screwed up software as Windows PCs, but because of the relatively miniscule market share of Apple PCs, there is a corresponding small amount of viruses written to target it. EG., does a vandal graffiti your back fence or would he/she prefer the side of a train. Hit the biggest target for the best return.
3/ Apples security systems rely on the user only attempted to install software obtained from Apple. Well I would bl00dy well hope that Apple tested software was virus free, wouldn't you? That Microsoft allows you to source your software from anywhere is like blaming Mitsubishi for your crash because you went speeding to fast around that roundabout. The bunny behind the wheel has to take responsibility for their own behaviour. If a Windows user only obtains their software from the Microsoft Store the attack vector is the same as for Apple.
4/ It very much depends on what you use your PC for and how you use it. Basic use is unlikely to get you infected. Any risky behaviour is likely to get you infected.
5/ Most modern viruses rely on social engineering. That is, convincing users to run a file directly from an encrypted (https) web site, thereby bypassing any operating system security measures, whether it be Apple or Windows.

That you have not yet got a virus on your mac is more than likely as a result of either your lack of risky behaviour, or your knowledge of what constitutes risky behaviour.
As for whether an Apple store is better at fixing their own devices Vs a local Windows technician, I think you'll probably find that your local Apple store is just a por at Windows as a Windows tech might be at Apple OS.

You drive a Misti Pajero Sport. Do you take it to a Toyota dealer for service or Mitsi dealer.

Excellent post Hylife, very well explained, hopefully the people that need to read and understand the content do so.+1.png

We are a mixed Apple MS household, I use Windows 10 because I have a reasonable understanding of MS operating systems, have been using them since Windows 95 (some have been better than others) overall I'm finding W10 an excellent OS, been running since very early in its release.

My better half prefers Apple, she uses an I Phone and an I Pad, both of us seem to get the job done without major drama and the difference is not a source of personal conflict.smile

I agree Santa it is not your work I think it is because I tried to show the code I used by taking away one of the square brackets and replacing it with a conventional bracket in order to show the code. I tried that many times and I think the system may have put a black mark against me thinking I was posting faulty code. Yes an earlier post of mine worked (I'm not sure it worked straight away) because when I try to do it again and try to post it the post disappears. I have posted a question to the Webmaster Cindi and hopefully in a couple of days something will be done. I have tried on my end clearing my cache and cookies and that lets me post again but not any BB code as shown in the "Posting How To"
