Erad you are the people we love to talk to try to understand in our travels . It's not us against them !! At school I absolutely hated other children being bullied . Most in my case where half cast Maori mates given a hard time by both Pakiha ( white kids) and full blooded Maori's . I was big and strong enough to try and prevent this . Often in trouble with teachers for fighting . Some where early Dutch kids that came in 60's / 70's too . So it's just not black V white .
This reflection is what makes unity and acceptance a very hard case to solve and one which unfortunately seems to simmer beneath the surface of many indigenous people and is a hurdle that somehow, must be erased from within by themselves...
About 18 months ago, My wife and I were leaving a Chinese Restaurant in Nambucca Heads, it was very quiet and we were the only people in the street except for one man walking up the street on the other side of the road carrying something in his hand. As he drew level with us and yelled obscenties at us, he called us 'white trash' and 'p#ss off and go back to your own country you F & C's". The tirade continued until we were too far apart to hear...we were shocked but not offended as he had only belittled himself, which is the tragedy here and is not Isolated to this one person. It was no surprise that his speech was slurred and the item he was carrying was a bottle of something in a paper bag!
The sad fact is, these feelings are not isolated they are inherent in many indigenous people (if not so openly expressed). The difference is, my wife and I would never ever publicly speak to anybody like that, let alone abuse (even if drunk), unfortunately this a problem that is a major hurdle in ever achieving unison and is one that must somehow be overcome, which I can't happening anytime soon!
