We've found GIO efficient & cheaper than some others, they handle claims well if needed.

You do not state what type of car you have or if it is a off road van as you will have to ask if you will be covered on ungazzetted roads. if insured with RACQ check with them to start with

Hi Rob & Colleen welcome to the forum, this question comes up all the time so you could use the search function to get some of the previous responses - personally I use CIL they may not be the cheapest but they are reasonably competitive and they specialise in RV insurance. By the way I can't really help you much with where you come from you will have to deal with that little setback yourselves biggrinbiggrin

RACQ for all ins. incl Cat.

54 yr Menbership gives roughly 50% off all prices.

Hi Bob & Collen,
Yes RACQ has been good for me both car & caravan.
Not so good though on house insurance if one lives in the tropics, unless you're not in a hurry for repairs to be carried out (eg TC Yasi - insurance work by their "cheaper contractors" in NSW was of a higher priority to Northern Qld - up to two years later)!

And we hope to hear of your travels/problems - there are a lot of experts on this forum who are willing to give good advice.

Keith & Judy, Qld no longer has GIO - it was sold by politicians to form Suncorp.

Make sure you read the PDS [Product Description Schedule] to make sure you know what you are getting and what you are not getting.

Welcome to the gang Bob and Collen, enjoy here and out in the playground.

Can I suggest you do a search in the 'search' box above in the thick blue line as this has been discussed many times so I am sure you will get some good feedback there.

Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

RACQ only gives a 17.5% discount for insurance for long term 50+ years membership - not 50% as quoted as quoted by Macka. Only thing they give 50% discount on is PlusCare, UltraCare and Roadside which are your club membership costs....all the rest of their products are 20% or less for 50+ years membership.
See:

Good Luck

Hello Bob and Colleen

A warm welcome from me

You have to try and pick the insurance for your situation

Over here in the West, I had been with RAC since about 1967, with only ever one claim as a teenager hitting a kangaroo

I then naturally insured my old caravan with RACWA
I have no idea how good they are, as I never made any claim, and I never read the fineprint

For whatever reason RACWA do not insure motorhomes

After getting a number of quotes, and reading the fine print
For my situation with a motorhome, CIL was the best for me

As Dougwe has already said, if you type caravan insurance into the search box, there are about ten previous posts on that topic

I hope that you find the insurance which suits your present needs, as some are cheaper than others

But...
Some give better coverage, such as get you home if you have medical problems, and are unable to drive, etc, etc

OK Hako.

Getting a bit carried away there probably.
Was looking at my travel cover at the time.

We recheck every 2 yrs. and so far.
OVERALL. like $2500+ a yr payments. RACQ gives most bang for.....

And that person with Yasi. and this last one.

Must have put in late claims to be that far down the ladder.

YASI.
we rang.

4 days later. Assessor.
Went through whole ext of house. And outbuildings\pool\carport etc.

We had made a small claim. Coupla hundred $$$'s.
HE saw and had fixed.
Another near $5 grands worth. Which "I" Hadn't seen.

all fixed within a month.
Basically waiting for new sliding door\window frames to be made.

"As priority repairs get. Priority"

This last one.
Power surges blew Air cond.
Rang. sent forms.
Contacted Air cond tech same day. He inspected and reported to RACQ again. Sat.

Mon, I checked.
"up to 10 days waiting time" for clearance.

He had unit in that (tues night)day. up and running.
We just had payment made out to his Bank acc't.
When it arrived in mail. ($2900) Yesterday.

HE... Trusts RACQ too hey.

Small Rural towns have some things going for them,

People trust each other.

We've made 5 claims in 16 yrs.
Mostly power and wind related.(1 car)
ALl fixed within basically, a week or so from first call.

NOT the cheapest. BUT.
If you honest they there on the dot. and instant fix. (so far)
THAT's why I give them a No 1 score. Quality of Service.

The old "Western QBE". was the same. Instant. no quibbles.
25 yrs. 2 claims. (Yacht theft.) but same day service.

Ring.
Go Get. We'll pay.
Get to Quinns. clearance for anything up to agreed $$$.
already rec'd over ph.
That is service. and we willing to pay extra for.

Another vote for the CMCA and Ken Tame insurance. Possibly THE ONLY dedicated caravan and motorhome insurer in the country.

Excellent reputation, also look at there optional road side assist program.

Compare and beware!

Don't forget most insurance companies give new customers a "honeymoon" for the first year, then on renewal the premium increases dramatically. The customer is not told this when signing and the hope of the insurer is that the customer automatically renews it next year.
So for the cheapest insurance you need to change companies each year, which is too much of a hassle.

My ideal insurance is one that covers everything - house, contents, car(s), caravan, trailer and valuables.....all in one policy and extracted fortnightly electronically. It would have to be cheaper and simpler but when I've asked insurers they say you must have individual policies because of different risks etc.

Good Luck.

Hi Bob & Coleen,

Our van is due for renewal start of next month, so i have just shopped all the relevant insurers like C I L, Racq, Youi again for the second year in a row Ken Tame and assoc. came up with the best price.

I know price is not always the main concern but he specilises in R V insurance, give them a call and get a quote.

bear in mind you have to be a member of CMCA ($60) per annum to use Ken Tame.

Happy Travelling

Bobkat

Trouble with Ken Tame is that they won't insure just the caravan, they want the tow vehicle/s as well, which doesn't suit many, me included.
