Computer warning - Remote access scams on the rise.

Another scamming method PC users should be aware of.

"

It has been almost one month since Jason fell victim to an internet pop-up scam and still he feels like the "stupidest person in the world".

Loading Facebook on his PC early one Sunday morning, Jason (who has asked not to use his surname) was met with an alert purporting to be from Microsoft, requesting he contact them immediately as his ISP was being compromised."

My original post had nothing to do with anti virus software, it was a warning regarding a phone scam involving giving remote access to your PC, suggest reading and understanding post before replying.no

Gday...

You are correct Santa ... this problem has nothing to do with anti-virus software - it is malware somehow loaded into Facebook (it seems) and as the article says opening Facebook will cause the 'scam' to be activated.

This is the description given by the 'victim' in the report -

Scam.JPG

This 'malware' firstly creates/opens a 'diaglogue' box on the screen, followed immediately by a voice recording, which sounds very much like someone has already gained 'remote access' to your computer. They purport to be Microsoft and give the advice that you need to ring a number to contact "Microsoft" so they can gain access 'remotely' to your computer and THEN when they genuinely have 'remote access' to your computer, they get the money out of the victim by requiring transfer of money to 'fix the problem'.

This is NOT one of those that come in an email, with attachment or embedded 'malware', for the 'unwary' to click on - it is a different kettle of fish.

Given it seems to have been rife on a particular Sunday, it has either been 'disabled' by those in the industry or these low-life only wanted to 'hit' once and fast.

My son is a computer technician and was inundated with customers who had suffered this problem. The rush of customers only lasted for a couple of days ... all had the same story, they turned on pooter, loaded FB  and whoops .. off it went.

As always, these little sh1ts cause mayhem, frustration and fear ... and create a good income stream for computer technicians to sort the problem they cause. hmm

Cheers - John

That would be a welcome, although probably unlikely in this poster's case, novelty.

Don't worry Cupie.
ALL mentalities are at differing levels.

I ramble on a bit with these drugs.
But mean no harm. They keep me awake Most nights.

IE. NEVER nasty.

Sarky..... Hmmmm Maybe.

I was just offering a little advice for general security coverage.
and a better way to do it.

Some are too dumb to see it (Sarky???)

Gday...

Macka ... .ya not rong son ... the vast majority of 'scams', computer invasions, etc are a result of people failing to be cautious enough and your efforts to educate users such as those to whom you refer is laudable and well-placed.

Many still open suspect email from people they have no idea about ... and click on attachments or links within those suspect email.

However, if the article posted was fully read and comprehended it is VERY obvious this particular instance was NOT the failing of an anti-virus program or an errant user not thinking.

I have observed far too often on forums that users all too often fail to FULLY read the links posted before either jumping to conclusions or mis-directing their otherwise useful advice.

cheers - John

I don't and never have had a Facebook account.

After watching Four Corners last night I'm very pleased I never signed up.

Yes John.
I have a bad habit of reading the first post and last post. then commenting on them.
There is too much "wanderings" in the middles of some of them.
Me included.

Smack. Smack. Pinkies paddled. OK.

In my case. I was just trying to get attention to the difference t'ween Paid and free
coverage.
They ARE differing in Quality. Massively so.
and nowadays with all the oldies stepping up.
They need the extra cover.

Too lazy to start another thread hey.
