Roma to Adelaide via Bourke, Mildura - stop-overs?
Permalink Closed

Hi all,

we are hitting the road very soon to head to SA for another job.  Plan to go via Bourke, Wilcannia & Mildura.  Need advice on stops, pet friendly (2 kelpies with us) and preferably free.  We will be taking the ute only, staying in a tent.

Day 1 we are looking to stop around Barringun, Ennogia or Bourke.

Day 2 we plan to stop around Wilcannia or Little Topar.

Day 3 will see us around Renmark.

Any tips on free (or very cheap) pet-friendly stops around these areas would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks everyone :)

Keep driving, download Wikicamps $8 & you'll find somewhere to stay along your way. Enjoy the drive. Don't stay in Wilcannia, this place is VERY popular. http://warrawongonthedarling.com.au/

 What is wrong with Wilcannia?????

Hope you have a good answer!

I was treated very well there two years ago when I had a medical emergency.

More like ''what's right with Wilcannia?'' Warrawong On The Darling 3kms out of town is lovely, we've stayed there twice for a week at a time. The caravan park in town has always been empty with good reason, theft, indigenous trouble etc.

The local medical staff would be well practiced for emergencies. A historic town but unfortunately a run down dump. Ask anyone.

I am with you here Helen.

The town is one fantastic history place, beautiful sandstone Port architecture, PLUS there is a great Van park on the east side of the Darling. Not sure if it is pet friendly though.

I find that there is some totally uncalled for fears of the place as we have had nothing but respect and help from locals when being there.

By the way Keith it was the local 'Aboriginal' people who helped me out initially.

Back in the early 80s my wife, 6 month old daughter and I drove home from Dampier to Newcastle after a couple of years working in the iron ore industry. The trip went well until we got to Broken Hill late one afternoon, as we had reached NSW and seemed so close to home we decided to push on a bit further. There had been a lot of negative press at the time about outback towns in NSW due to problems that some of them had been experiencing with "locals". When we got to Wilcannia we felt absolutely intimidated by the number of indigenous people hanging around the streets and decided to push on, same again in Cobar so we took off for Nyngan. About midnight we hit a large roo 5kms from town, damaged the car and put us out of action. That irrational and unwarranted fear of indigenous people caused us to make a pretty stupid decision in travelling a dangerous section of road late at night particularly as we had been on the go for over 14hrs..

I'm now almost 40 years older (and hopefully a little wiser) I tend to judge both people and places from my own personal experience and not what I hear from others, the next time that we are travelling out that way I will look forward to staying in Wilcannia, Cobar or any of the other outback towns.
