IS there anyone from South Oz heading North to the NT after the Easter break. Just wondering about free camp availability and is there going to be others around.
My wife and I are heading up to Kununarra, then Darwin mid June.
We did a similar trip some years ago, and did some free camping on that trip. There are all sorts of free/cheap spots, and judging by the constant stream of traffic heading north, I wouldn't think you will be on your own. There are roadhouses with parking accomodation, lots of rest stops ( probably not recommended in lots of cases ), and other very popular spots like the Devils Marbles, Banka Banka etc.
We found that mid afternoon people start looking for camps. Download the WikiCamps app from the net, and you will see a host of helpful info/photos/comments etc. Talk to fellow campers, and you will get many suggestions along the way.
Maybe also buy Camps Australia Wide camping book with all sorts listed accomodation.
We are going to make one of our early camps at the Pimba roadhouse where you certainly will have company. Better to pay a small fee if you feel safer, talk to others as you go, and learn from those who are going up at the same time.
Plan your trip initially around some safe and comfortable camps , then as you continue on and get some confidence, try somewhere that has other campers so you feel safe. Not much fun trying to settle down for the night if you cant enjoy your sleep.
Enjoy, Barry
