Hi all after researching many places to stop overnight on the stuart ... curious to know if anyone has camped at the henbury meteorite craters site ? 11km gravel road to location and cant find too much info on actual campsite all I know is its very cheap , They say its ok for a conventional vehicle but not everyone slows down !!!!!!
We stopped there back in April 2013. The road at that time was very corrugated, much worse than we had been led to believe. We got in there ok towing our dirt road van, but we took it very slowly and I probably wouldn't have done it if we had known it was that bad. The campground was basically a gravel carpark type area with bollards to divide camping spots, no shade. We had thought about camping there, but after a walk around the craters, which you could make out but weren't exactly spectacular, with nobody else at all there and it still being early afternoon we decided to travel on to Alice Springs.
Been there, done that, although a little while ago. Wide open space with little more than a sign on the fence around the craters. Worthwhile experience for me, one night only. Like many outback spots, early morning and late afternoon provide input for an interesting look around. Road from the craters to the Stuart had been freshly graded and local conditions change a lot and often.
If out that way, worth a look even if it is just to tick off another point of interest, but, as said, I found it interesting.

Thanks everyone .. Watched a bit about the place on youtube .. interesting to see the craters but not sure about road there ! as mentioned in one of the posts . willdecide on the day ... around $4 per person per night to camp there no toilets etc.
We were there last june, but didn't camp there (day trip only from Stuarts Wells). Road in at the time was excellent gravel surface, but since then there has been a lot of rain. I would expect that there isn't much traffic so I reckon that the road will still be reasonably good. As said, no facilities there.
