Hi the age old question, using the small room in some of the free camp areas,my wife has an aversion to these some times rather unpleasant spots, why don`t the user`s keep them cleaner and make sure everything goes where it should Paper is the worst, any suggestions for my anxious free camper better half ,what do you ladies do.
People who are that 'precious' could always provide their own toilet facilities, then they can't blame anyone else.
A good portable toilet costs under $100.
I think 'precious" is a bit harsh. Unfortunately, some people are just disgusting. Make your wife a very happy lady and buy her a Portaloo for her birthday vowing to empty and clean it for her whenever she wishes.
Why don't people keep the fee camp toilet clean? Because some people are pigs
I have been in some houses where I have dry reached because they are so filthy. Cheers Daz

I agree with Peter, as per use your own, if you are not happy with what you see
My wife mainly uses our toilet in the camper van, as she does not like public or free camp toilets
When we used the caravan (without a built in toilet), I carried a port a loo, and a shower tent in a box on the back
I use public toilets while travelling, and when I see paper on the floor, I pick it up and put it in the bin, or pan
In the free camps with a lot of people and not many toilets, I mainly use our own toilet for number two, and the camp toilet for number one, if it has a urinal
Porta pottie for Number 2s and pee bottle for urine, for both of us. Rubber gloves and a bottle of generic brand bleach satisfies the hygine standards for us.
As for untidy and somewhat misused public toilets, I'm happy that they are using that facility instead of the often seen open field leaving the toilet tickets to blow around in the wind.

Semi-permanent state of being Recreationally Outraged as a defence against boredom during lockdown.
Talking of ladies & toilets we are currently camped in a free camp on the South East SA Coast where there are no toilets provided.
There's only one other caravan here besides us.
Yesterday a woman ''took a dump'' right beside our neighbours van in full view of them.
What a lovely ''lady''.
Any old long drop toilet would have avoided that situation. Clean or messy!
Makes it even more "lovely" when you know them DD.
I use my own toilet all the time and only empty in appropriate places.
We have no en-suite in our van (by choice). We use our trusty Thetford Porta Loo when there are no facilities & always dump in appropriate places like you Doug.
The sand dunes in this scenic relaxing spot adjacent to a beautiful ocean beach are full of human crap & toilet paper. A real pity.
For hygiene and peace of mind alone.
Take your own tut. They cheap enuff.
Looking at some public\van park\etc toilets on our travels. There's no way I'd eat food at any of the persons who've been in there
homes. If that an example of their hygiene
Pigs is being polite.
Away from van etc. (In car) I have a short shovel and pack of lime in car all the time.
Doesn't take a tic.
I was a distance runner in younger yrs.
ALWAYS had half a doz, squares of tut paper in pouch on belt with drink.
Unfortunately then. it's left above ground behind a bush.
But normally well out in country when it happens.
As Macka17 stated, a cup of lime in those "stinky" long drop toilets does the trick and in a few hours all is sweetness and light! ie, if each user sprinkled a some lime after completing "the paperwork", long drops would never stink. Lime's quite cheap and it's easy to take a bucket of lime on your travels to use in bush dunnies!!!

Actually calling them pigs is an insult to pigs as they will do their business in the one corner of their yard ( given there in a reasonably sized yard ) not all over the place like some humans

When we decided to adopt the grey nomad lifestyle we made sure our van had an en suite, shower and all the gear for safe hygienic camping. I cant understand and, have written about it many times, why a decent human would drop their dacks and poo anyplace, or for that matter empty the toilet in open ground. Baxter in WA (free camp) is a classic example... Loo paper everywhere... WHY I ask!!!
Being self contained is a choice made when the caravan is purchased. Being clean and responsible nomads is a MUST!!
Rant over
