Travelling with a Portable Toilet.

Good morning everybody,

We are new members to this Forum so "Hello".

In about a month, we will be going off on a trip to visit friends and a Son who we have not seen for over 10 years.

We intend going from here in Qld. through to Victoria, South Australia, then onto WA. After seeing our Son and his family in Perth we intend on travelling north along the coast then across the Gibb River Rd.

At this stage we are not sure which direction we will take after that.

So, onto the actual question of Portable toilets.

We will be travelling in a Isuzu ute and mainly Free Camping, that is why we are taking a portable toilet. The top tank is 20 litres, when do I fill the top tank with water? The whole unit looks a bit flimsy and I an concerned with leaks etc. while travelling along rough roads. This brings up the second question on water availability. Given we would probably get a week out of the water tank and maybe a week before we need to empty the waste tank, where would we be able to rely on getting more water from?

G'day Gears and welcome to the forum.  Plenty of great advice and folks on here.  Don't forget to try out the two games - Who is This in the I digress section and Pick This Place in the general section.  'Pick this place' is a great way to find new places to explore.

Still trying to picture your plan - toilet set up in the ute tray?.  Guess sensible to take an extra jerry can of water for filling.  Surely the instructions tell you when to fill etc. but if not then Mr google should be your friend - just do a search for the brand/model of toilet.  Sorry I can't help more with the information given.

And it's welcome from us two 2 Gears quite a trip you have planed there may I surgest that a long handled shovel may be a good friend on your travels if you are free camping and that would make your portable toilet last longer as for replenishing your water I will leave that to others

G'day, generally the time to fill the toilet top tank is when it is nearly empty, sounds simplistic but, there ya go. If you are worried about strength, just keep a litre or 2 in it to last a couple days.

If you (two???) are pretty 'regular' you'll find 3 days is about the maximum you will get between emptys.  Do a search above for Nappysan to find the best, economical product to keep smells down.

You will find a lot of towns have a Dump Point for emptying your Black Water tank and most (not all) have a tap beside them for rinsing.  If your jerrycans is just for the toilet you can fill it there but often it is not potable water.

If you have a Smartphone, download the app Wikicamps.  It costs around $7 but it will be the best $7 you ever spend.  It has all the info in it that you need including where to get water.  Most service stations won't mind you filling a jerry or two when you refuel.  (Nullarbor excepted)

Cheers & happy travels.

Thanks everybody, I appreciate the help. I had already thought about a long handled shovel. My main concern was the actual travelling with a container with flushing water and waste not leaking while travelling. I was not going to set up the toilet in the ute (Cadpete), it is just that we will on a lot of rough roads.

Hi gears from me too. We don't have a portable toilet but I have read on here, somewhere, of some that don't fill the holding tank at all but just use a 1 litre plastic squirt bottle of water for after toilet use. This was because of the weight of moving the toilet with a full holding tank etc.

Just a by the by - If you are wanting to know where public toilets in Australia are - google "Public Toilet Locations Across Australia" and "National Public Toilet Map" and fill in some information and it will tell you where to go. (pun intended).

Enjoy your trip. Cheers.

We also do what Gaylehere said a spray bottle of water and disinfect , Only use it for wee stops but we had to could use it for hard jobs . It does make it lighter to move around and last a lot longer between empty , We also use homebrand nappy san , We use about 2 table spoon to a half lt of water to start in bottom tank .

If you just wee in it you are wasting your money using nappy soaker.  It totally relies on solids to activate it.

Thanks again to all who replied. I think that I will just put enough water in the top tank for a couple of flushes if we are only staying over night, while travelling either empty or just a little from the previous night. I will adjust the amount of water depending on how long we will at any one spot. Again thanks and safe travel to all.
