Norseman to Newman

Evening,

Part of my planned road trip will be getting from Norseman to Newman, I'm keeping as up to date with any flood information, but I was just wondering if I could get advice on the best way to get there.

At the moment my current plan is to drive the State Route 49 to Leinster and then cut across to Mount Magnet via Sandstone and then continue up to Newman on National Highway 95. However I have noticed there are a lot of water ways on that route and am a little worried about how much water there may be on the road.

Would it be better to head closer to Perth and join the National Highway 95 further south?

Any opinion would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi  Mercer 213,

We travel this same State Route 49 coming from Sydney. We tow our boat/ van all the way to Mt Magnet. Then on to Yalgoo to Mullewa to Geraldton, then on up to Exmouth.

I RATE this Road with a ***** rating. The road is wide and flat and I cruise at 102km all the way pulling 2650kg. A very relaxed drive. Its 95km longer for us going this way to the West.

But worth every penny as traffic is minimal, A car/ truck every 5-10 minutes.

Leinster was built by BHP Billiton for its Nickle mining operations. It has a caravan park with hot showers $20 PN. paid at the IGA store. At its most busy time there were 1700 FIFO workers.

Spotless services runs the Pub (Way over Priced) OR if you want a night off cooking, Walk down to the camp Mess ( Its A Dry Mess) NO Grog. @ $20 PP in the Honesty Box as you enter. ( Great Food) for all you can eat. It now has card payment fuel, As does Sandstone. There's a New Road House at the northern end of town in Mt Magnet. Route 95 I can't help you with.

We used this road last June and return in October. And have done so since 2010.

BHP closed off its operations there a few years back. It now has 3-4 mining companies working their now. There is a Motel run by the pub across the road.@ $120 twin share.

Regards Jim & Lambie

Water across the road comes and goes fairly quickly. Check at Coolgardie before proceeding. The info centre or police should be able to check for you. Some of the travellers coming the other way that you meet at service stations should know what the weather in the area has been, that also would give you some guidance.

I think you have selected the best route. If you are stopping at parks then most of then in the gold fields are reasonably priced. The one at Meekatharra has been described as being a bit rough in the past.
