They're around, they can see you, and you can't always see them: that's the warning from Northern Territory national park rangers in the wake of a 3.7-metre salt-water crocodile being caught in Katherine Gorge.
The croc was pulled out of a baited trap in the gorge in Nitmiluk National Park (NNP), about 30 kilometres north-east of Katherine in the Top End on Friday morning.
It was the sixth salt-water crocodile caught in the first gorge of the 13-gorge system since 2009.
And it was in the average size range, said Andrew McPhee, acting district ranger for NNP.

Many believe that the Johnson crocodiles that are common around Katherine Gorge won't hurt anyone - I have been there when an English (woman) tourist has been mauled by the "safe to swim near" Freshies. Have even seen tourists getting their kids to move closer to the freshies for a better photo. Not this little black duck

I spent several years in the NT and during that time numerous crocodiles up to fourteen foot long were trapped in the Katherine River and in the Edith River near Edith Falls. I recall when a number of horses and dogs went missing the local rangers trapped a fourteen footer at Donkey Camp just out of Katherine. Another time the police found a large saltie in a culvert at Pine Creek, well away from the water.
Forgetting that WE were put on the planet as part of the food cycle too. Ask any bear, shark or croc. Their environments.
YOU take care or stay out. Humans in general are a blight on the planet. Destroying everything. One day it'll be reversed. and the planet will be a better place. we really are a virus.
PS. I'm not a do gooder. Shot more than most, and caught more fish (trawling) Back in '50's to early '80's. Then my eyes were opened as to what we really are doing to the place.
Only things I'd like to shoot nowadays, are paedophiles, Politicians, and Union men.
You'll find it's 99% city people that cry Kill Kill .
normal, bush ones accept life and it's differences.
And live with them. comfortably.and safely.
We are not. The be all. end all of the world.
Back in '03\'05 we couldn't take thecanoes out. early in season.
there were 3 prowling around.
You notice those Rangers don't have a weapon between them.
It's just a 1\2 day break from boredom for them. (all smiling)
Happens all yr.
They come in. we shift them out.
Idiots do things stupid. and pay the price. They deserve too.
It's NOT the Croc's fault they put themselves in a KNOWN food chain.
Just pure stupidity by human beings.

Apart from the comment concerning sterilising, a concept I take extreme contempt to, given the way it was delivered, the crocodile is a magnificent animal. I would not swim in its kitchen, and if it swims in my kitchen, it is stir fried with garlic and ginger and other greens with a touch of oyster sauce. Other than that, the sterilisation comment still irks me, can you please explain how, as a male, I can sire a thousand brain dead individuals? I am clearly a person who has clarity and a perception of a fair and equitable outlook on life. So please expound, I would love to be enlightened.
