1979 chassis numbers

Hi guys, hope your all well. I have purchased a 1979 statesman caravan from VIC and came this morning to get a blue slip to transfer rego to NSW. Can anybody please tell me where the chassis number is? The mechanic says top left of A frame which there is a 4 digit number, however it's no where similar to that on the rego papers. Very confused, any help would be appreciated. Cheers Dave

Gday...

I could be wrong, but I don't think the chassis number is recorded on the Victorian registration for vehicles/vans.

I think it is the VIN that is noted on the VicRoads rego papers.

That is recorded on the compliance plate (usually in the van's boot) along with the ATM/TARE etc.

My van's chassis number (registered VIC) is not recorded anywhere other than what is on the A-frame only the VIN on my rego papers.

Cheers - John

G'day John, The van I bought doesn't have a boot and I've searched everywhere for compliance plate. I read on a different forum that someone found it in a cupboard but no luck. There is a 1137 stamped on Aframe but the number on van rego papers is 0122957. As I said its old 1979 so not sure what I need to do to transfer rego. Thanks a lot mate for your help. I really appreciate it. Cheers Dave

Hi David you will not find a VIN number on the van as before 1980  a vin number was not required Vic roads when they registered them after that date assigned them a number which is what you have the number on the frame usually is the serial number for that van build Vicount and Franklins used this system as it gave the year built and number in that year exclusive to that van, hope that helps

Could I ask if NOT having a stamped VIN is a problem for registering? My rig is about due to be registered and has no stamp, 1987 coach. Weird, I have looked and looked but its not to be seen.
Should I just punch the VIN into the chassis myself (its recorded on update plates here and there but they are only rivetted on) or front up to Vicroads as is?

Previously when I have sought to register a trailer which had no Vin number the Dept. issued a number and I rivited a strip of aluminium to the top of draw bar and the issued number was stamped on that at the time of inspection. This may be similar in your case. Cheers Allen

Hi Allen, Thanks for your help mate. I have just spoken to a friend who confirms that you are correct. In NSW you need to get a blue slip, a weigh bridge ticket before going to the registry to apply for a vin number which is then riveted to the top left of the Aframe. Thanks so much guys for all your help. Much appreciated. Now to find a weigh bridge near Campbelltown.

Caravan VIN plates were not fitted before 1989. Prior to that chassis and van manufacturers put their own numbers on the chassis. There is usually a number on the drawbar and often there is a number on the chassis under the front LH side of the van chassis.

Bagmaker if your rig is a modified bus it will definitely have a chassis number, when it was first registered if on the very rare occasion a vehicle did not have a chassis (or engine) number you were issued one at the registration office told to go away and come back with it stamped. No exceptions. very common for the number to be on the last 400mm of the front of the chassis usually on the outside vertical face. And back then often a basic truck chassis was used, let Mr Google be your friend.... what brand of bus?
