Talangatta Mitta Mitta area

We are heading towards Bright for a week in April and would also like to see around Mitta Mitta area. Just trying to work out the best place to stay. We often free camp but because we plan to do day trips around the area we prefer to be in a park . We have a 20' van any recommendations where to stay. I have found parks at Mitta Mutta , Dartmouth and Tallangatta any suggestions appreciated. Also which way would you go to Bright , across the mountains to Bright or go up to Albury and down.

Absolutely recommend Tallangatta Showgrounds. Very pretty and safe, could easily leave van there to explore area.

We also free camped at Lightening Creek on the Omeo hwy  and visited Mitta Mitta from there. We felt safe leaving our van there,  but up to you I guess.

Regarding route to Bright I'll let someone else advise.

Its a beautiful area I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Cheers Dianne

ps the picture in my avitar is Lightening Creek

Delightful part of the world.... I cannot recommend any specific places to stay, but I suggest that you take the time once set up to follow the Trappers Gap road from Mitta Mitta through to Mt Beauty. Awesome scenery. It is a gravel road, and I wouldn't recommend that you take your van along it, although I would consider taking my 16 ft Jayco - with care. Check it out without your van first.

As for getting to Bright from Mitta Mitta, I suggest that you head back towards Tallangatta, but turn off at Tallendoon, and go through Tangambalanga & Kiewa and then turn left onto the Kiewa Valley Highway towards Mt Beauty. About 4 km from Mt Beauty, turn Right and go over Tawonga Gap. Steep climb and descent, but short. Use low gear, especially going down the other side - don't rely on your brakes. Once over the gap, it is an easy run into Bright. All good sealed roads. There are short cuts via Gundowring, but I wouldn't recommend them towing a large van. Depending on what you want to do, Mt beauty is a good spot to stay a few days as well.

Jingellic is a great free camp if you are in the Tallangatta area

Tallangatta to Mt Beauty through Dederang  is a lovely drive. No problem at all with a van.

Although a few k's further, the drive through Beechworth, Myrtleford and Porepunkah to Bright, is also great. Enjoy your trip jbrinks.

Cheers, John.

You'll need much more than a week to get any kind of appreciation of how beautiful that area is. More like a month minimum. Jingellic is VERY popular!

If you end up near Myrtleford, Nug Nug is lovely.  http://www.nugnugreserve.com.au/

I should have said we are booked in at Bright for a week but have longer  to spend in the area. Have done around Corryong before but not down towards Mitta Mitta. I agree it's a beautiful area . Thanks for all the replies much appreciated

Both the show grounds and the CP at Tallangatta are good but if you require the amenities block go to the CP. It is much better and only $5 dearer.

If you go down Mitta Mitta way the park at Eskdale is far superior (I eye-balled them last year.) Also Eskdale is $20 per night and Mitta is $30. We drove into Mitta, had a look and then drove through to Omeo. We should have back tracked to Eskdale.

My route to Mitta would be this one. Tallangatta is shorter in distance but would depend on whether you were going south from the Mitta area or not. A visit to the info centre/museum at Dartmouth is a must. It explains the workings of the Goulburn-Murray Water Corp. If you are luck you may get to see the control room where they control the water flows in the system.

PeterD, your route from near Kiera to mount Beauty is just off the main highway. I have not been along that rd. Is it a pretty good road, and is it perhaps better scenery than the highway?

Cheers, John.

This is a typical section of the road. There is some at the ends that is better, it has a white line down the centre.
