I hate the night

>The problem with Knives of any sort is that they can be wrested from you and used against you with severe/fatal consequences

One could say this about any weapon - so what would you have a lone individual do? Not protect themselves in any manner in case it was wrested from them?

Part of my suggestion regarding the knife is that it becomes a talisman and imbues the holder with confidence and that was the basic thrust of my post - we need to *feel* powerful in the face of adversity.

Haha never fear!! It'd be the brave (and stupid - but that's what those POS are) that tried anything on me.
I don't even get humbugged I'm so hard out lol.

If those POS are on steroids or high on crack - It can take up to six fit coppers to handle them (absolute fact) - Raid wasp killer to the face will bring them to their knees instantly and has an effective range of up to seven meters - a much safer option.

I love the night when it has been stinking hot, the smell of the rain coming, sitting outside, no mosquitos, midgies, sand flies and you are mellow from a few wines, single malt scotch or whatever. The awning is the first hint of rain falling with the sound of the drops just starting to play the melody of rain after a long dry spell. Thunder in the distance, a spectacular light display as you get mellow. The coolness that comes from that first tantalising caress of the rain, the hint of relief of the oppressive humidity of the last few days.
The coolness of the next few hours of a downpour that, not only settles the dust, but settles you to a nice nights sleep. You are drummed to sleep with the comforting sound of rain drops on the caravan roof. You wake up refreshed, breakfast with cereal, fruit and coffee, or tea. You have the radio or television on. Then the news hits, the temperature for the next................................I really hate night like that because it can be guaranteed to be humid, muggy and uncomfortable the next day!

There isn't an option unfortunately GG - Tasers don't work on them - but the great unwashed seeing six burleys drop the POS to his stomach to cuff him are pretty quick to post Police brutality on FaceBook - I don't know if you've seen the latest round of "Raptor13" videos - a personal friend - having to tolerate firstly the abuse and then the video hatred spewing from more POS.

LaL - rain disturbs me too!!! Lol. I constantly check weather and when the rain comes....my heart sinks. This is generally because I'm in the bush and worry about getting stuck. Rain....well more specifically clouds, are just a downer to me. Give me bright blue skies all the time. Although I didn't suffer as badly in the territory in the wet.....the warmth must make a bit of difference. I do TRY to embrace bad weather since I love water so much, but it is hard for me lol. Expecting rain as of overnight for the next few days where I am now......

Poss........I wouldn't be a copper for quids. I can't even stand seeing waste of space people in the street....let alone having to put up with their abuse because society has become so 'accepting'. I'd deal with the lot of them in a very different way than the great unwashed on FB do. I'm appalled at how these people have been allowed to rule the streets. Bourke st being a good example. Utter disgrace that innocent, law abiding people are having to live amongst these uncontrolled ferals under the guise of 'human rights'.

Security is one main reason we went motorhome over caravan .Dont want to start a debate tho ! I must say we've had "no" issues in 4 years . We either stay right in towns or way out in countryside .. Often off the side of truck stops or a few 100 meters off main road just to rest overnight . Looking and finding a spot before it gets too dark . You see plenty of spots when you don't need one . Often hard to find when you do !' Ahhh !! lol

Hahaha seems easy to do here (debate).
I've certainly had no issues in 5 years in free camps. I'm usually way further off the road than 100m if possible.
I've had two issues in caravan parks. One was some BOS trying to get into the van. He'd had great success with lots of vans over the times, because people were leaving vans open overnight......that I don't get. Lucky for him I had Ross river at the time and had insomnia- his outcome wouldn't have been favourable had he got in (my hatred of losers is huge).
The other was when I was managing a park, so a bit of a different situation (but certainly a consequence of society letting nutjobs walk the streets amongst us!).
There's no way I'd open door at night....I don't care what story they tell....too bad...so they'd have to actually get in before I was in danger...by then they would be.

Halls Creek is where I had local open the door while Mrs went shopping !! The look on his face when he saw me ! Right height for a good kick in the head too !! Be wary in that town . Btw a few 100m is more than 100m although on the other hand security can be better close to road ?? But I think we worry too much !!

some good advise reading through your conversation, esp. for someone starting travelling alone . In company going around OZ, I had no problem pulling of the road , now I am already planning my stops going to Birdsville in early July for the Big Red Bash, Crazy Cruiser

I'm more worried on the road with 1 in 7 on drugs while driving.

However they have to sleep somewhere don't they.

Having said that no problems per se avoided a couple by leaving.

Same as Aus-kiwi in town or well out and away from road especially Fri and Sat nights.

Remember that you can often pull over in industrial areas as they are often well lit and open (no where to hide) and many have security patrols at night. All good.

Just my 2 cents worth.  baz

Hi crazy cruiser,  you will love Birdsville especially if you stay for the races as well.   Just be well prepared you could get stuck. They had a lot of rain out that way last year and roads were closed.  I went the year before.  Once I turned off the black top it started to rain but it only got a bit sticky in places.  The gravel road is quite rough.  Quite a few were changing tyres along the way and the tyre place in Birdsville does a roaring trade.   Just take it slowly and drive to the conditions.

Good thoughts and tips baz.
That's what probably happened with the poor French man up the Stuart hwy.
this is why these people should be shot!! Why let the losers roam with us decent people?
I also ALWAYS judge a book by its cover. Absolutely, every time. So if I sniff 'loser' I move on. (Hahaha it probably why I stick remote....I'm like the wide mouth frog around cities (lips pursed tightly) "there's a lot of those around here isn't there?", lol. Neither would I be indulging them in conversation like the poor French man did. Some of the notable rapes, assaults and murders occurred because people were treating the perpetrators as 'equals' and speaking with them.

I just read a post on FaceBook; "During the day, I don't believe in ghosts - At night, I'm a little more open minded."

If you not staying in van parks/pubs etc, do your shopping during day and park well outside of towns. Well off the road. Unfortunately we are getting too many of the wrong kind around nowadays. Me, now i,m older, have a short handled cattle prod inside door? Long ones have too much leverage if they get hold of it. Tazers frazzle you, prod will throw a human backwards, they boot.

Let's face most of us are getting on a bit and although we still think ourselves six feet tall and bullet proof - could you go a round or two with a 'roid raged street hood?

In line with the advice offered to me by a police officer after a failed attempted break in at our home.

Though I do carry a 2'6" long steel torch full of batteries.   Shine in the eyes & then dong on the head.  Perhaps.

Was carrying his pepper spray, 21" telescopic extendible baton and 15 round magazine Smith & Wesson 9mm semi automatic handgun when he told you this?

I have lived in the bush all my life! To be honest, I would be a lot more worried about spending time in the cities then I ever would in the bush! Just pick your spots carefully!

Hi Grubbygypsy, I think a lot of us have shared the same feeling as you and relieved to see the sunrise.  I keep a can of wasp spray handy, and if needed it works from quite a distance from whatever it is you feel deserves a spray. I also get the little bottle of 'White Out' and mark the can so I can easily direct it where it needs to go in a hurry.  I know I have a sense of humour lol, but in life you have to have one, as long as you know when to recognize the more serious moments in life. Good luck with your travels, take care... Kisha.

I don't keep anything defensive as I have decided that if I hear a Wolf Creek laugh, that is curtains for me! Realistically, how many of us singles are threatened? I felt threatened once, and that was when I was weaned! Camping, Caravanning and in a swag, the threats have always been the same, snakes, spiders, pigs, crocodiles, wild dogs and drugged morons you hit over the head with a shovel!

Other than that, life is pretty good as a pool shark, taking the local population for at least a thousand a night, changing plates and stickers on the van, moving at least 500km a day after a sting and setting up the next sting with a couple of lousy games!

Why would I worry about being alone at night?

And, yes, I am being sarcastic about this post, if you don't like the feeling about the place, it is simple, move! Suss it out first, then leave!

It's funny.....since that particular post I started....I've never had the feeling again.....yet.......
I'm never about to put online my 'defences' carried - but let's just say it'd be a sad and sorry dead c... that'd try anything on me.
Hahaha....as you may have read......I'd see ya dead if you dropped litter.....so I have no dramas being hard out with anyone that's not got my best interests at heart.
Lance - you are too funny about your weaning!!!! You could be my bestie posting lol - but he doesn't get on computers lol.
