I've searched enough. Time to post here. I've got my solar panels 210w and 100amp battery with good quality regulator. I have a SBi 12 redarc unit that has been gathering dust in my shed, thought might as well install it in the van so car alternator will power the van battery up while driving. Cable size, 100amp fuse each end etc is all figure out. But I understand you can't run the alt and solar at the same time. I've read you need a relay switch wired to the cars ignition so when you stop your engine the solar panels take over. Can't someone name a brand of switch I can buy?. Thanks.

Hi Eaglemax

I have a Redarc BCDC1240 controller with a relay to switch the input between the solar panels and start battery. It is wired as per the diagram below but not sure if this configuration will work with your sbi unit (there are a few models on Redarc's website). But the diagram will give you an idea on how two charging sources can be switched via a relay. This relay http://www.narva.com.au/products/browse/changeover is similar to the one I use.

Jusr check the voltage and amp rating of the relay. Too small amp rating and it will burn out.
